Babies: 3 - 6 Months

DS is 3.5 months and kind of stinks at rolling tummy to back, anyone else?

My ds started rolling tummy to back a couple days after he turned 3 months.  He did it a few times in a row, and then a couple hours later when we did tummy time again he couldn't figure it out.  Its been like that ever since, sometimes he gets it right away and does it a couple times in a row, and then the rest of the day he can't get it.  He'll go a couple of days without rolling over sometimes.   He hates being on his tummy so he gives it all his effort to roll over.  He gets his butt way up in the air and leaning over, the problem is that his arm gets in the way.  He won't push himself up and roll.  I try fixing it for him but he goes right back to the same position.

Is there anything I can do to help him out?  Or will he eventually figure it out?  Just trying to see if its normal or not for him to do so well at it sometimes, and then not at all other times.

  • DD started going back to tummy at 4 months and still can't figure out belly back. She has the same problem gets about halfway and gets frustrated. I just figure she''ll get it eventually.

  • Ha, DD started at 2.5 months and it was her favorite thing - for a month we had zero tummy time because she kept rolling over.  A couple weeks ago she just stopped.  When we put her down for tummy time she lays there and fusses like she's totally helpless.  Then again the only thing she's interested right now is assisted sitting and lap standing, so maybe she doesn't care about rolling at this time.  Who knows? lol.

huh? I thought tummy to back was usually first.

DD did tummy to back long before she did back to tummy.

  • Yeah, tummy to back comes first generally. Mine did it at 4 months 3 days.  She has not gotten back to tummy, just back to side.
  • My LO did tummy to back first, but only twice a couple weeks ago and hasn't done it since. The past couple days she has rolled back to tummy -  especially at night when she's in her crib, just so she can freak me out when I go in to check on her.
