Adoption

Intro and a ?

Hi ladies. I'm popping over here from TTGP, and looking for some info. Mr. Umm and I have talked for years about fostering/adoption. The longer I spend teaching and seeing the kids that I do, the more determined I become to go this route. However, we have been ttc for about 24 cycles now and aren't ready to give that up.

So, my question is, how does ttc affect our chances of fostering/adoption. Would we still be allowed to go through the process on the off chance that I do get pregnant, or would we be put on hold. And, would we then have to start all over again? I'm new to all of this, so any infomation would be appreciated.

Re: Intro and a ?

  • I can't speak for the fostering process, but I can write a little about adoption.  Every agency is different - some allow you to continue treatment. Others prefer you to stop.  In our case, our agency requested that you complete treatment before moving onto the adoption process, so that you could focus entirely on the adoption.

If we had gotten pregnant somehow while going through the process, we would have had to put our application on hold.  Depending on the timing, we may have had to start over - ie. started a new homestudy.

My suggestion would be to reach out to a few agencies and get some info.  We met with a couple agencies/their directors and then made a decision.  Go in with a long list of questions and see which agency best fits you and your husband.

  • It depends on who you go through. Some places require you to shift all of your focus to adoption, and some let you do both. So the key is to talk to the places you are interested in and find out their policy.

If for some reason you went with an agency that didn't want you pursuing IF treatments, and you got pregnant anyway, they would most likely put your profile on hold until your bio child was a certain age, at which point you could enter back into the pool (after updating your homestudy or any other paperwork). You wouldn't necessarily have to start from scratch.

As far as foster-adopt or straight fostering is concerned, I believe in most cases you will specify how many children you are capable of fostering, and if it's more than one you can lower that number should you get pregnant and not have the room for more foster kids. At least that's my basic understanding of it.

  • I'm too new myself to answer your questions.

    But welcome to the journey!

  • Our agency doesn't allow you to actively pursue adoption and fertility treatments at the same time.

  • While fostering you are able to continue TTC as well. :)

  •  Just wanted to say, welcome!! This is an awesome board.

Also- our agency didn't have an issue with TTC/pregnancy, but you would have had to disclosed it. I don't have any experience with foster to adopt but hope to soon!

Hi Sky! It's nice to see a familiar 'face'.

  • We're not fostering but going to adopt a child in the foster care system (who is already available) and our county said they don't care if we're still TTC. They said as long as we can raise them they don't care how many we have and they won't put anything on hold if we get pg during our classes!
