Babies: 3 - 6 Months

rolling and crawling

When did your LO start to crawl?  DS started rolling over this week and everyone seems to think it is really early.  We were not surprised because he has had SUPER strong legs since day 1!  Once he rolls over he has his head completely lifted and chest up with legs moving.  Once he gets the arm thing down he will be good to go.  He is getting frustrated though.  I know it is super early to crawl, but am excited to see him making progress in the right direction!  Just want to know about your LO's out of curiosity!

Re: rolling and crawling

  • crawling doesn't usually start until 6-8 months.  Rolling over does not mean they are about to crawl.

  • You likely have a few more months. Babies usually learn to sit first. And honestly, and this is hard for new moms to understand, I wouldn't be TOO anxious to have them crawl. It's exciting for sure, but your life will get much harder! My DS didn't crawl until 9.5 months and I had been told to enjoy the time when he could sit, but not move. And it was great to be able to leave him on the floor and not worry. It all happens so fast, so I wouldn't rush it!

  • I agree with the above posters. DD had great head control and strong legs too, but she did everything when she felt like it. She went from not crawling (meaning army crawling backwards) to one day just crawled across the room the correct way. That is the way she did everything.

This. Plus my LO started rolling over before he turned 3 months old. I don't think it's that early for them to start doing that. I'm not that anxious for him to crawl since I know he'll start getting into everything then!

  • Both of my girls started rolling this week. When we told my MIL about it, she was so excited, and has asked DH if they've started crawling yet! I told him that we shouldn't expect that until closer to Christmas!
  • DD was doing this at 3 mos. as well, and she is still doing it but has some thrown some backwards army crawling into the mix.  I agree that it is very exciting!  But I also think it will be a while before your lO is actually crawling.  Enjoy the not-as-crazy time while it lasts, once they motor, it is a lil' tougher!

That would actually be really early for crawling--according to our physical therapist for DS--rolling from back to belly is a normative developmental task for babies aged 5-8months (meaning this is around the time they should start rolling from back to belly--by 8 months if they arent it becomes a concern). I would guess crawling would be MUCH further down the line
