Baby Names

A different Anderson ?

I have liked the name since I was pregnant with DS but was afraid to use it because I don't like the nickname Andy. The name (as a first name) keeps growing on me and I would like to consider it again. Do you think it is possible to name a kid Anderson and not have it shortened to Andy?

Re: A different Anderson ?

  • You can name your kid pretty much whatever, and if you insist and correct when it comes up, your kid will be whatever name you give him/her. That said, once they develop their own style/tastes, their nick names are up to them, and occassionally their peers.

  • You can insist when they're young, but once they're school-aged it often changes. And, to be honest I can't imagine a little boy wanting to be called by the full name Anderson . . . I bet he'll think Andy is much "cooler." So, if you really hate Andy, you probably should look for another name or use Anderson as a middle name only.

  • If thats what you call him and correct people until they get the hint then that's what her will be called. It is possible.

  • Of course it's possible. I know an Elizabeth who doesn't go by any nicknames (Betty, Lizzy, Beth, etc.). Of course, if Anderson gets older and wants to be called Andy, that'll be his choice. I know a Jacob who goes by Jake and his mother hates that and ranted to me once, but it's none of her business now that he's a man. I think that Anderson is a fantastic first name. You should go for it.

  • most people i grew up with with longer names [3+ syllables] who didn't like nicknames never had a problem. your child might, however, like the nickname andy and there's not really much you can do about that.

he could also be shy and not feel comfortable saying "my name isn't andy, it's anderson," so that is something you may keep that in mind.

  • What about Anders if you ever need to shorten it instead of Andy?

    ANDERS

    Gender: Masculine

    Usage: Scandinavian

Scandinavian form of Andreas (see ANDREW). A famous bearer was the Swedish physicist Anders Angstrom.

  • Ditto with the name growing on me, I'm 99% sure of using it (as a middle name in my case).

I think you can get away with nn him Ace? Not sure if you're into that, but I think it's kinda cool for a kid.

  • My son's name is Anderson and noone has shortened it yet to Andy.  He is 2 and we picked a middle name that begins with a J so if in the future if he would like a nickname we would like to go with AJ.  My husbands name is Andrew shortened to Andy so I really don't want two Andy's.

The only problem with the name is that my son still cannot pronounce it.  He has difficulty with all the syllables!  It is cute though how he says it.

  • I watched a movie yesterday (gotta love Netflix Instant Streaming!) and the main characters name was Anderson.  I love it and I agree with others, if you consistently call him Anderson, so will everyone else.  All through HS, my DH was either called by his last name or Andy, but now since I call him Andrew, so does almost everyone else - except a few that haven't seen him much since HS.

    I agree!
