Babies: 3 - 6 Months

45 min monster?

DS will only nap for 40-50 min. stretches 3 or 4 times per day(in his crib).  He wakes up crying and is almost impossible to put back to sleep. I have tried it all, swaddling, paci's, rocking, sound machines....  I have also tried to let him CIO  for a min or two but he just becomes really upset and I just can't ignore him at such a young age. He will nap FOREVER in the swing, but I really hate to create a bad habit. At night he sleeps ok, some nights better than others, getting up between 1 and 3 times to nurse.

Does anyone else have a LO who naps for 45 min? I swear I could practically set my clock by his naps...they are ALWAYS within the 40-50 min range!

TIA for any input or advice

  • Mine does.  3    45-60 minute naps a day.   I will also let him sleep whereever he falls asleep for his nap.

  • DS naps 4 times a day for 30-45 minutes tops. Some babies are just like that.

Yup. And she will only nap if I lie down with her.

  • Yup, I have a 45 minute napper, too. Like clockwork, 3-4 times per day. On the 4 days a week I'm home with him, I will nap with him once per day, and that will usually be a 2-3 hour nap. Nothing else works. Good thing I enjoy that nap time with him!
  •   I have never tried this but baby whisper suggests waking your LO a few  minutes earlier than his usual wake time (so like at 35 min) just slightly and then putting him back down.  Babies REM cycles are 45 minutes so I guess the theory is if you disrupt the wake cycle it will extend their naps... maybe worth a try?

I've also read that the Baby Whisperer suggests you go into your LO's room at the 34 minute mark, and put your hand on the tummy or back and when you feel they are coming out of the sleep cycle, gently shhhhing them back to sleep.  Eventually when they wake from the sleep cycle they will be able to put themselves back to sleep.

We do this with DD.  Some days she naps like a champ (2-3 hour naps) but others (like today) she wakes at the 45-minute-mark and I need to go in and pat/shhh her back to sleep.

If I let her wake up then she's overtired because she hasn't slept properly.
