I know Midwifery care is not for everyone but it is sad when it's not at least an option to consider.
DH sent me a link to an article from his hometown paper. Homebirth is illegal there but there are some CNMs that are allowed (under the supervision of an OB) to care for patients that deliver at hospitals. So they need a to find a supervising OB and then also find a hospital that allows them in.
Only one of the 2 hospitals in his area gave them privileges (this was actually heavily advertised as a positive reason to select that hospital over the other) and now they just notified them that the program would be ending because of the economic climate - their contract ends in Oct, and current patients will have to find new care. There is no evidence of negligent care (in fact many passionate, positive comments about past experiences as comments to the news story). Last time I checked MW care has continuously been proven to save money and the article said the 2 of them delivered 10% of all babies born there in the last year.... sad.
Re: midwifery practice shut down in dh's hometown
wow, that's sad
i don't even understand the economic climate argument - i would imagine they're less expensive to keep around than the OBs! and if they're delivering 10% of babies, that seems pretty good to me! ...oh, but I guess it's harder to cut back on the OBs. sigh.
