Thick, stringy, clumpy breastmilk

I have a clogged duct that has turned into mastitis.  I'm on antibiotics and have been trying to pump out the clog.  I pump exclusively.  When I pump the affected breast I'm barely getting anything out of it and what I do get is usually big clumps or thick strings of milk.  I strain it out so the baby doesn't get it but does anyone know if this is related to the clogged duct or the mastitis?  Any tips on how to break up those clumps so I can get the ducts unclogged?  I feel the clumps are the reason I can't pump out the clogs.

  • Sounds like you are working out the offending clog.

  • I just had a discussion with a LC yesterday about this.  I had a clogged duct and milk blister, but was able to correct it before it got to the stringy, clumpy consistency.  She told me if it does, just keep massaging the area, use warm compresses to help clear the clumpy-ness, and get the milk flowing again.
