Baby Names

Lucia

Is your first thought "spanish" or "italian" when you hear this name?  Just wondering about people's first impressions.

We settled on this name months ago but I am curious as to what people think when they first hear it.

I will explain more once I got some feedback on this....

 Thanks very much in advance.

  • Neither, anymore. It's become so mainstream. It's like your first thought when you hear "Madeline" is no longer "Oh, French."

This. The name sounds Italian to people who think that much about a name's origin if they hear it. "Lucia" would never make me assume a child was of either background unless her last name was diCamillo or Fernandez.

  • I think it depends how you would pronouce it.. "Loo-sha" or "Loo-see-ah" or "Loo-Chee-Ah"...it's a Latin name... but usually pronounced Loo-chee-ah in italian and Loo-see-ah in english.

If I saw it on paper, I would look for the last name as to how to pronouce it.

  • Look for my post from yesterday, a ways down, I posted about this exact same thing! My post had A LOT of replies and was interesting to hear everyones opinions.

We are using Lucia if it is a girl (team green). Our Lucia will be "Lou-sha". Like the island in the caribbean or the saint. If people use the last name to help decide how to pronounce it, they will never assume it's "Loo-chee-ah" or "Loo-see-ah".

  • My first thought is the saint, who was Italian.  However, since I live in the PNW, when I see this as a person's name I assume Spanish pronunciation.

I believe the saint was Scandanavian.
