Massage?

Okay, so my husband emailed me today to tell me that he booked a massage for me at a spa this weekend "because I deserve it".  It's very thoughtful and I was totally surprised because he has never really done anything like that before.  So I checked the spa website and the massages that they offer are a hot stone massage and a relaxation massage.  I then Googled whether or not it is safe to get a massage while pregnant.  Apparently it isn't so black and white.  I read things that said it was totally safe, and I read things that said that massage could stimulate miscarriage.  Some people even said that they showed up at their appointment and were turned away.  Most things I read said that prenatal massage was fine throughout pregnancy because they are specially trained to deal with pregnant women, but I don't think that's one of my options.  I want to ask my husband if he happened to tell them I was pregnant when he called, but I don't think he would have thought to do so.  I don't want to do anything that will harm the baby, and I don't want to show up only to have them turn me away.  I would feel so bad for him to not go after he put so much thought into this.  Does anyone happen to know anything about this?

Re: Massage?

  • Massages are fine, but you definitely need to notify the place where you are having the massage that you are pregnant.  If you don't, you risk being turned away if you weren't booked with someone who is licensed for prenatal massages.  Also, avoid deep tissue massages.  If you still don't feel comfortable, you should ask your doctor.

  • My chiropractor told me absolutely no massages until 2nd trimester. Oddly, my original OB I went to, nor my family doctor I'm seeing now (who is a former midwife), have mentioned a word about no massages.

  • There are a lot of benefits of getting a massage while pregnant! Though most spas will not massage you if you're in your first trimester--if something like a miscarriage were to happen, they do not want the liability. Definitely talk to your doc and let the spa know of your pregnancy.

  • Well, I explained it to him and he is going to call and cancel.  I feel super bad about it, but better safe than sorry.  I think his feelings are a little hurt nonetheless... Sad

  • DH and I went for a couples massage at the beginning of August.  He had a relaxing massage and I had to have a prenatal massage.  The only difference between our massages was that they couldn't do a deep tissue massage on my legs (they don't want to cause any blood clots).  It was fantastic though!  Make sure the place you go to is licensed and certified in prenatal massages.  While you're pregnant they use extra wedges to make you comfortable.  Make sure you drink plenty of water before and after.  Also, massages can add to your nausea if you have any.  The therapist told me that a relaxed mommy makes for a relaxed baby.  You can have a massage in ANY stage of your pregnancy!  I can't wait to go back!

This.  I had one at 8 weeks and absolutely loved it.

Instead of cancelling - why don't you call your doctor and get their opinion?  Mine was all for it as long as it wasn't deep tissue and I informed them I was pregnant.

  • Dont be worried about saying something to your husband. Just ask him if he might has mentioned it or not.If not let the spa know that you're pregnant and ask if they have someone that can do that kind of massage. And after all that, have a great time!
  • I had a massage on thursday bc I hurt my back (or this baby is hurting my back, lol). I told I was pregnant and she skipped my belly and upper legs. She seemed to know what she was doing and I felt great after. I would call your doc and ask but I think you should be ok.
  • If a massage worries you...what about something else?  A facial is fantastically relaxing...or a mani/pedi?

  • I've had massages early on in both my pregnancies.  They are performed by a woman who is also a Doula, so she knows the pressure points to avoid.  Otherwise, it was not different than a prenatal massage.  I've also had a prenatal massage when I was about 7 months and the big difference is that you have to use special pillows to support your belly.  I would call the place and see if it would be ok.  If not, I would find a place that is familiar with pregnant women.
  • I am a Registered Massage Therapist in Canada, and have been in practice for 11 years. There is no reason that you cannot have a massage unless of course you are at a higer risk for a miscarriage, or your OB has told you no for whatever reason.

I don't know where you are located (US or Canada). If you are in Canada you do not need to find someone who is licensed in Prenatal massage (unless you really wanted. RMT's in Canada have over 2000+ hours of training (almost 3x's that of some US states) and we are trained in prenatal and infant massage in school. Yes you should explain to the therapist that you are pregnant, because there are areas that should be avoided, or that lighter pressure should be used, but massage doesn't need to be avoided during the first trimester or at any time during your pregnancy.
