I would spell it Alison because that is how a friend of mine spells it. I have another friend who spells it Alisen, but we've been friends for about 10 years (the other girl and I have been friends for 20) so hers still sticks with me.
I prefer Alison, because phonetically Allison should be read ahl-ison, but honestly, either Allison or Alison works. They would be pronounced correctly by everyone and easily recognized.
i'm not sure what "phonetic" argument the PP is making up there. What is Ahl-ison and how is it different than the way I've been pronouncing my name for 31 years? Does she mean that the first syllable of my name should be pronounce like the word "all?"
That has never happened to me once in 31 years.
obviously, I"m partial to Allison, but I also kind of like Alyson.
I think Allison. Probably because I prefer the nickname "Alli" or "Allie" to "Ali" (which in our culturally diverse era could easily be mistaken for a boy of Middle Eastern descent).
Edit: To carry that further, an "Ally" is someone who fights against the Axis, and "Aly" looks like it should be pronounced AY-lee. So even if you happen to disagree that the 'y' spellings are juvenile, I would still strongly consider what your daughter will most likely be going by. Alli and Allie are unmistakeable.
Re: how would you spell...
Avoid the Y - it's cre8ive. Go with either Allison or Alison.

I like Alison first, then Allison.
I don't like the "y's".

Allison.
I like the traditional spelling and really wouldn't want to make my child correct everyone on how their name is spelled. JMO.

Allison... simple is good.
That's fine, but if it's tradition you're after - Alison is the most traditional spelling, not Allison.
Just an FYI.

I went through this when naming DD. Mainly because I wanted to call her Allie, so I had to think about how to spell that too (Ali, Ally, etc.)
I felt that Allison was more traditional and would be less confusing. SO, her name is Allison, and we call her Allie.
