When would you call the doctor?

Dd breaks out in mysterious rashes/hives. They don't seem to bother her at all and we've never figured out what makes her break out. Earlier this week is was all over her bottom and lower back, then that cleared up and now it's her face. She looks like she has a raging case of teenage acne!

FWIW, my dh has really sensitive skin and without allergy medication he always breaks out in random rashes so I really think that dd probably just takes after him.

Like I said, the rashes never seem to bother her or itch. But her poor face! At what point would you actually make an appointment for something like this? Or, would you just wait and mention it the next time you happen to take your dc to the doctor for a regular appointment?

  • Has she been through allergy testing?

She had a blood allergy test when she was one because we suspected she was allergic to peanuts (and she was.) But she's never had the more extensive traditional kind of allergy testing.

  • It depends on how far off the regular appointment is.  If it is within the next few weeks, I would wait until then.  I would not wait if the appt is in 3 months or so.  Either way, it would be a good idea to take a picture or two of the rash to show the doctor.  Those sort of things seem to disappear on me the day of the appt.
  • I'd probably try to get an appointment while she still has the rash in case they need to see it/test it (true of the celiac rash).

  • My LO has experienced this a few times. I've called the dr each time, 2 times we actually brought him in. The rash usually follows a fever, but nothing else. They always tell me it's a virus and the rash is the last stage. Apparently the virus is being flushed out of their system, so the rash appears. It makes me nervous every time. Never bothers him, though.
