Baby Names

Help me pick

Up until last night when I went to bed, I was thinking Atticus if this baby is a boy.  I wasn't 100% in love because I wasn't coming up with an easy nn but I picked this name out a few months ago and figured I would go with a J middle name and always have the AJ nn to fall back on (which I also was not in love with).  Then this morning I started thinking more about the name Zachariah (or Zechariah).  I don't like the nn Zach (could I go with Zech though if we went with Zechariah?) but it's at least an easy nn.  I figured I could stick with a J middle name and at least have the ZJ nn to fall back on (which I like a little more than AJ).  I haven't shared these with DH because he is still stuck on Chance so I am going to have to wait and pull the 'I just gave birth' card.  I am also looking for mn suggestions.  My backup is James, just because it's short (with a 3 or 4 syllable first name and a 3 syllable last name, the kid needs all the help he can get).  Oh, and DDs name is Ellison, if that matters at all.  Thanks![Poll]

Re: Help me pick

  • I voted for Atticus.  A teacher I had in HS named his son Atticus (he was an English teacher, so a literary nut).  I guess his favorite book was To Kill A Mockingbird.  I like it, it's different, but not too crazy.

  • I'm so NOT in love with the nn Zech. It sounds like wretch, which then makes me think of gag. I'm not sure that it's the best choice for a baby. Your other choices are nice.

I didn't vote..because I like Chance better than your choices, and you didn't give that option.  But if you went with Zachariah/Zechariah (though I prefer Zachary because I feel like the iah femenizes it, and just adds unnecessary syllables) what about nn Zeke (prounounced Zeek)

  • None of these names are my style at all so I didn't vote. However, I will say I think you are putting way too much stock into the nickname thing. Why do you have to have a nickname planned out in advance? A nickname is supposed to be something (at least to me) that is reflective in some way of the person's individual character, so you can't really know what it should be until you meet the little guy... No matter what you name him, something will naturally arise. Or it won't and you'll just call him by his full name, and that's fine too.

    This!

Just whatever first, real name you love and let the nick name come on its own.

And wow, Zechariah is a real name. Weird. I wouldn't use it though.

  • I'm not against the name Zechariah, but the nn Zech would be a con for me, not a pro.

It sounds like you're saying "Blech!" (You know, it's what you say when you are grossed out.)
