Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Do strangers touch your baby?

I wrote a more detailed post about this on my blog today, but I wanted to ask here, where I know there are a lot of moms.  Do you get a lot of strangers touching your baby?

Is there a nice way to ask them not to do so?  I cant figure out a way of saying it without sounding really b*tchy.

Re: Do strangers touch your baby?

  • Yes we've had people touch our DD's face twice now! It usually happens SO fast I almost blank out in disbelief! I didn't say anything either time because I couldn't believe it!

But a few times people have gone to reach for her and sort of caught themselves. My husband has blamed it on our DD a couple of times saying, "OH sorry, she has a cold right now!" When she doesn't-but they don't know that!

That way it looks like you are protecting them when really you could care less about them and just want to protect your child!

I don't mind when people touch her feet-usually it's a mom that knows better! Ha!

  • Occasionally, it's usually her feet or arms.

Even stranger, I once had a family circle around my daughter and take pictures of her when we were shopping. One even had her daughter stand next to her to get a picture of the two of them.  I was little alarmed because I didn't know them and I didn't like them taking pictures of her.   Here's a picture that my husband took with his camera phone of this happening...the lady in orange is holding a camcorder.

    What the hell?

I probably would have ran off

  • Yeah, I was annoyed.  They didn't even ask permission, I was combing through a rack of clothes and I turned around there they were, making chirping noises at her.  Then the cameras came out.  Huh?

  • people touch my daughter ALLLL the time.  She is a big fat baby, and I guess people think it is A-OK to grab her cheeks or her thighs and comment how they just chubby babies.

At first, it really bothered me.  But, now I just figure she is probably getting more nastiness from the 4 yr olds that cough and sneeze on her when I pick up the 4 yr old from school.

I can't help you with a comeback or anything, I was never good at thinking that fast on my feet

  • Every once in a while oldies will touch his feet or tickle them but I honesty don't mind that much. Sure, stranger danger and all but I'd prefer people to be personal and friendly then afraid of me and my baby, and for me to be afraid of them. Usually he gets upset anyway when people get to close or anything, so they back off.
  • Personally I think they will get more germs from random things like touching a cart..but I usually wipe down the cart..I also always have a baby wipe out so if someone touches Noah I just smile..and then when we walk away I wipe his hands so that they dont see.  I agree with pp that they probably have more of a chance of getting sick from daycare.  I dont like it but I know they just think he is cute.

  • Seriously, it's a baby. People LOVE babys. They will touch them and your child will not die, I promise! I don't get this at all. What are you going to do, just not take your baby out at all?!?!

  • I never even mentioned germs, or him getting sick.  Thats not the thing, I just get weirded out by people rubbing his head and touching his face.

  • Do what my husband did once...one time a woman walked up and was commenting how cute DS was and she reached out and grabbed his cheeks and my husband reached up and grab her cheek and said in a baby voice "He thinks you are cute too!!"   I kid you not!!!!!!  I about died right there!  But the woman was so taken back and smiled and said bye bye to the baby and walked away!!  I bet she never touches a baby's cheek again!

  • not a lot, but every now and then. when i see someone getting close i either switch him to the further away side, take a step back, or if he's in the stroller i steer it to the side and lean over him to do something (fix his collar, adjust the strap, whatever)
