Baby Names

Is Charlotte really that popular?

I'm not pg, but if/when we have another girl I'd like to name her Charlotte.  I see it mentioned an awful lot on here to only be ranked in the 60s or 70s, as it was on last year's SSA list.  I'm wondering if it's just popular among people on this site or if it's going to end up in the top 20 next year.  Thoughts?  How many babies/toddlers named Charlotte do you know?

Re: Is Charlotte really that popular?

  • I don't know any babies or toddlers with this name.  I only know one girl named Charlotte and she's in high school.

  • I know a ton, but that's because I live in the area where the kind of names that are popular on name-nerd boards (like this one) are very popular in the general population, too. That is: urban, educated, northeastern US who are turning to "old fashioned" names like Ava, Isabelle, Charlotte, Ella, etc.

I don't know any Briannas or Kaylees or Nevaehs. I believe they are "more popular" but I think it might be in the South or Midwest.

But if you aren't pregnant now, you'll be able to see how popular she is getting this year. On the SSA board, you can see that she's been rising by at least 20 points per year (and even 50 and 60 sometimes) for the last ten years. I don't think she'll ever be Emma, but who thought Ava would be?  I predict top 50, if not top 20 in the next 5 years.

  • I know 3 baby Charlottes.... one coworker just named his daughter Charlotte, and there are 2 at DDs daycare.

  • I know a few --just went to a 2nd b-day party for one of them yesterday.

I agree with PP about depends on where you live--it seems popular around the Boston area.

Lila and Charlotte are two of the up and coming old fashioned names.....replaced Madeline,etc....

I would bet Lydia will be the next semi popular old fashion name--almost used it on my baby born last month.

  • I suspect that, as Allie30 said, since it's very popular with the educated, urban crowd currently, it'll eventually trickle down to general population use and rise even higher in popularity.  Maybe not top 10 or anything, but definitely higher.

  • I only know of one Charlotte and she was just born this week. It's popular on name boards, but I do think it will rise in the next few years...mostly likely a thanks to Sex and the City. That said, since you aren't pregnant yet, I'd look at the SSA Names list when they release it for 2010 next year - sometime in May I think - and then compare it to the top 100 names for your state, because while it might be popular in one area, it could miss another area entirely.

  • On Nameberry, it's the #1 name for 2010 so far. That's just people who look up this name on the site, so I don't know how that will really translate to the SSA list next year. We were considering Charlotte too, and I just thought it was interesting.

  • I know 3 Charlotte's born in the last 3 years. I honestly don't now that many babies, so to me that is a lot.
  • I know of one child named Charlotte. I don't consider it popular. Remember that the bump is not representative of the world.
  • I only know one Charlotte, she's a woman in her late 30's.

  • The SSA.gov sites it as the 68th most popular name for 2009. I think that's actually perfect. High enough on the list that people can pronounce and spell the name, but not so high that she'll be one of six Charlottes in her class! :)  https://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/popularnames.cgi

Our daughter's name, Anna, was 22nd the year she was born, but I haven't run into one child her age with her name. I think that's pretty good. I think you're safe with Charlotte.

I would think that if Sex and the City was going to make any difference at all it would have done so by now. The show started in 1998.

  • I know one Charlotte who is a toddler. I think it is a beautiful name! We chose a name that was in the 50s range on the SSA list for last year, and I have only met one child since then with the same name. I agree with others in that a name's popularity really depends on the region you live in.
  • I know 2 IRL and they are both under 2.  I live in the midwest.

  • It's only ranked at 68, so no I don't think it's too popular. I looked at all the names above it and there are names I never, ever hear! I just think a lot of people consider it, hence why we hear it all the time. Try looking up the popularity by state. I looked up my state and only 69 were born in 2009. To me, that's not very many at all for an entire state! I always laugh a little when people say it's sooooo popular. It's nowhere near the top 10 or 20! BTW, I don't know a single one!

  • I don't know any little Charlottes.  However, I did not know any babies or toddlers named Nora/Norah when we chose Norah for our daughter.  It was ranked 249 on the SSA list the year she was born.  She is one of four Nora/Norahs at her small daycare and there is another Nora in her ballet class.  (At least she is the only one with an "h.")  Our son's name was 49 on the list the year he was born & he rarely encounters someone with the same name.
  • I know 1 Charlotte and I see it on this board all the time.

    It's not my favorite...
