Ned as a nickname for Nathaniel

We both like the name "Ned" but I also love Nathaniel, and thought we could use Ned as a nickname.  DH says he's never heard of Ned as a nickname for Nathaniel.  Has anyone else or would this seem really weird?

Re: Ned as a nickname for Nathaniel

  • I've never heard of that either. I've only heard Nathan and Nate as nn for Nathaniel.

I don't know what Ned is short for (if anything.)

  • Dont' see the correlation at all.

  • Watch out for the nickname police! They run rampant on this board!

Given that "Ned" (AND Ted) is *traditionally* a nickname for Edward, which DOESN'T EVEN HAVE AN N IN IT, I don't see how it can't also be a totally reasonable nickname for Nathaniel as well. If Jack can be a nickname for John and Peggy can be a nickname for Margaret, then Ned can CERTAINLY be a nickname for Nathaniel.

I had a friend in school whose name was Nathaniel and he went by Than.

Nicknames are COMPLETELY MADE UP. They can be ANYTHING YOU WANT. There is NO RULE.

  • I don't see a correlation either, but it's a nn, so you can use whatever you'd like.  If your son doesn't like it when he's a little older, he can just introduce himself as Nathaniel, or Nathan, or Nate.

  • I've never heard of it as a nn for Nathaniel. I have nephew named Nathaniel and he goes by Nathan or Nate. I've also heard Nat as a nn for it.

You could also name him Nathaniel Edward and call him Ned. Just a thought.

I completely agree.  The only thing I differ on is the use of nicknames at all, but that's a story for a different day!

I know one Ned, which for him is his nn for Edwin, and he's a delightful man.

  • My oldest sons name is Nathaniel.  We call him Nathan and Nate.  His little brother calls him Nat.  I cringed when I read your post, but thats just because I love my sons name and nicknames so much.  It was the perfect name for him.  I am not a fan of Ned...but, I don't think it is horrible.

  • That is a huge stretch.

I love Nathanial (and Nate) but I do not like Ned. It reminds me of Ned Flanders

I agree. There are no rules with nicknames! I really like Ned as a nn for Nathaniel.

  • Doesn't make sense, but how do we get the nickname "***" for Richard? I never understand that one either!
