Cloth Diapering

Thoughts on skipping prefolds??

We're pretty set on cloth diapering. I have heard that prefolds are the way to go for newborns.....But I'm thinking I don't want to invest in them since I will only use them for a short period of time. My first son was 9lbs at birth and came home at about 8lbs, never lost any more than that, and within 2 weeks or so was about 12lbs. So I was thinking of just starting with the OS pocket diapers that we were planning on stocking up on instead of using the prefolds first. I don't mind using disposables for the first week or two if he needs to grow into them. What do you ladies think?? Should I just stock up on my OS pocket diaper stash? or buy some prefolds as well? TIA

Re: Thoughts on skipping prefolds??

  • We never used prefolds. We did a kissaluv's trial with Thirsties brand covers for the first three months. Chances are that a OS packet diaper (like a BG) is not going to fit a newborn, unless your newborn is 10ish lbs. Next time around, I plan on doing sposies until baby is big enough for the BGs. If you want to cloth diaper from the beginning, I'd get some prefolds or do a kissaluv's trial.

  • There are sized prefolds that you can use past the newborn stage.

I would get maybe a half dozen to have as an option.

And I'd get some sized diapers and not necessarily rely on OS diapers working right out of the gate.

  • We are really new to this, but I wanted to offer my experience. I had all one size pockets and was planning on using sposies until they fit. Well she was getting such bad diaper rash, and I was tired of using the sposies (they just didn't seem comfortable to me). We ended up investing in prefolds and covers when she was ten days old. I am so glad we did. That being said, I have 18 prefolds, 2 covers, and a wool soaker. I do laundry every other day. I have seen a lot of people recommend a lot more, but for us the little bit we do have is working fine. I shopped on sale and it only cost $60. And her diaper rash was gone as soon as we switched. • A case of Pampers is $42 at our BRU- you could get a dozen or two PFs and some covers for just a bit more than that and then use the PFs in the future as doublers or dust cloths (or something along those lines).  And, if you have more kids, then you'll be all set.
