PCOS

Hey, Ladies! My husband and I are trying for baby #2. I have PCOS and had to undergo fertility treatments for almost a year before we conceived. My periods are anywhere from 35 - 50+ days apart.  My OB wants us to try naturally for 6 months before going back to the fertility specialist but I feel like based on the fact we needed help last time, I'm just wasting my time waiting. Any thoughts? TIA

Re: PCOS

  • If you aren't ok with waiting 6 months, go to an RE. You have a known fertility problem. I have PCOS as well (never formally dx until I went to an RE but "knew" I had it). I'm very upset with myself for waiting as long as I did. I think it is different to go straight to an RE when you have a known fertility issue. Good luck.

  • Can you get an ultrasound and bloodwork to see if you are still polycystic? I've heard that sometimes a pregnancy can help regulate things.

Also, you may want to chart a cycle or two to see if you are ovulating.

  • Without regular cycles, I wouldn't waste any time.

  • You could try charting and then you'd be able to know if you are indeed ovulating. I would go straight to an RE though, don't waste your time with your OB.

My OB didn't mention coming in for an ultrasound or bloodwork. I guess I could always call and ask.

I've never tried charting before. Any recommendations as to a good website for charting?

  • I would have your OB re-check you for PCOS. I was Dx with PCOS while TTC DD and was put on Clomid in order to O. My OB told me that pregnancy usually resolves PCOS (alhtough not 100% of the time). I went off BCP when DD was 9 months old so that I can start tracking my cycles, etc. and see if we were headed down the IF route again, and I got pregnant the next month. GL to you!!

  • Thanks so much, everyone! I'll check out fertilityfriend.com

g8orell - was your cycle longer than usual after you stopped the BCP or were they "normal" 28 - 32 days?

I didnt actually go to the doc. because it hadnt been a year of unsuccessful trying but we tried for 9 months for DD. We knew we wanted our kids close so when DD was 3 months we started charting.  I joined fertilityfriends.com took the online class to learn to chart and got pregnant with this LO the first try after 2 months of charting.  GL

With DD...I went off BCP in April (on our honeymoon, LOL)...first cycle was 30 days (which was normal for me before starting BCP)...then each cycle got longer and longer...I think it went to 35 days, 45 days, then 60 days. At 60 days is when I went in and was checked and determined I had PCOS. Luckily I was very proactive and aggressive with it (I'm in the medical field, so I pushed PCOS testing even though I have no other symptoms), so I was able to conceive within 6 months of trying (with the help of Clomid). I went off BCP when DD was 9 months...first cycle was 30 days with O on day 16 (I was happy b/c that was "normal"). The 2nd cycle (my BFP cycle)...I was temping, but not consistently b/c it drove me crazy with DD and I promised I wouldn't get like that again...plus we weren't 100% there yet with #2 considering DD was 9 months old...so I stopped temping and wound up with a BFP, so not sure if that month would have been a normal cycle for me.

  • I also have PCOS and needed Clomid to O and concieve my DD. After she was born, I didn't go on BC because we wanted to try again and didn't know how long it would take (given it took over a year for DD).  My period was still pretty abnormal so my OB gave me a script for Clomid to start again when we were ready.

I got my AF in June (first time in about 2.5 months) and got pregnant that month!

    GL to you!

  • I also have PCOS. My fertility Dr. put me on Metformin (also used for diabetes) in Feb to help regulate my periods. Some people I have heard get pregnant right away and some take longer, It took me about 6 months to get pregnant with only metformin.

Worth talking to ur Dr about it. GL

  • I have PCOS and was taking metformin as well as BCP's and we were not even trying and I ended up pregnant. Of course, I did miss a few of my bcp's which probably did it, but metformin somehow increases your fertility and helps you ovulate but is not considered a fertility drug but it sure worked for me.. I also had very irregular periods and was convinced I'd have a really hard time getting pregnant, so maybe you could just go on metformin first for a little while and see if that does anything for you.. since it's a whole lot less expensive than specialists and treatments and all that.. so it couldnt hurt! =)
  • I have PCOS, my cycles used to be like once every three months. I had been on Yaz for the past 4 years which helped to regulate me.  I went off BCP two months before our wedding expecting that it was going to take me a long time to conceive.  Dr had already told me that anytime I wanted to start Clomid he would prescribe it.  I decided we would try for about 6 months first and then if nothing try Clomid.  After going off BCP I had 2 regular cycles about 30 days apart.  The next month I started charting using fertilityfriend.com and also used the OPKs.  I totally didn't expect anything but took an early test about 5 days before I thought I would start my period and was shocked to see a BFP first try.  So sorry to ramble but just wanted to give you some hope that it can be done naturally even for those of us w/ PCOS :)

  • I too am on Metformin and think that may have played a big part in it.
