After much research, advisement from my mother and a course on CDing, I'm planning to exclusively use unbleached prefolds and waterproof covers. I was told this was the best method for newborns because their poo isn't solid yet, but from what I understand most discontinue this after about six months. What I'm wondering, is how long this method is suitable for... has anyone used this method beyond the breastfeeding stage? If so, have you noticed any drawbacks to continuing it beyond the introduction of solid foods?
Re: Prefolds and waterproof cover
I discontinued after 2-3 months.
Using prefolds, or prefolds and an insert, is tough as they get older and pee more. And you're dealing with an increasingly squirmy baby, making securing the prefold a challenge.
IMO it's always nice to have prefolds as an option, but I would never rely on a single CD type for an entire diapering life cycle.
We use prefolds for the daytime routine and pockets for night. We also send pockets to daycare two times per week. I do not see a problem with using prefolds and covers. In fact, we don't even use snappis. We just lay the prefold in a Prorap cover and go.
