NN help for Lorali?

DH seems to believe that if we named a girl Lorali, people would automatically call her Lori one day regardless of what we say and enforce. This is his belief because he was Steven to the world per his mother until one day in jr high he became Steve. Now, his sister is and Will always be Bethany and never Beth because their mom out her foot down. Lorali is growing on him, but he feels the possibility of an auto nn is keeping him from loving it. Is there any way of convincing him that whatever WE call her everyone else will too? Thanks.

Re: NN help for Lorali?

  • There was a Lorelai when I was growing up and she had no nickname. An alternate nickname would be Lora. Or Lila. I'm sure that nicknames evolve, anyway. I never thought we'd call our daughter Anna Annie or Monkey. ;)

  • I feel for Steven. There are some people who will insist upon giving you a nickname no matter what you want. I have TWO friends Elizabeth who both go, against their wills, by Liz because no one will say Elizabeth. They say they would have wished for different nicknames (like Beth or etc.) had they been given the choice. But Elizabeth is 4 syllables, which seems to be the breaking point. My name is three syllables and I've never had a problem with people using the whole thing.

How do you plan for "Lorali" to be pronounced? I would probably pronounce it Lore-ah-lee. If she gets a nickname, it'll probably be Lorah, not Lori. But you can probably get your foot down if you want.

Be advised, though, that she might decide on her own that she wants to be Lorah or Lori.  I'm giving my kid a name with a lot of nickname choices because I was always jealous I didn't have any.

  • I find if you correct people enough and teach your child that their name is Lorali then people will call them that. I have a cousin named Christopher he is called Christopher. I also have a friend who named her 3 sons Jonathan, Brandon and Nicholas none of them have nicknames. People get the hint.

  • Lorali is kind of a funky spelling. I'd spell it Lorelai or perhaps Loralai.
  • The nn I'd see most for that name is just "Lor" - beautiful name!

This. And (random) but on 'Gilmore Girls' Rory's real name is Lorelai but is called Rory...

The first nn that popped into my head was Rory, and I could not figure out why until you just posted this, ha!

Lorelei is the German mythologic spelling

Lorelai is the Gilmore Girls spelling. I like the show, but not THAT much.

  • Lolly, Lo, Rory
  • Thanks for your input ladies. I guess I'll just have to talk him into taking a chance and see what his mom did for Bethany. We still have plenty of time. Allie, it will be prounced like Lorelei, I just prefer the other spelling.
  • I prefer the Lorelei spelling. I think if you stick to your guns and just correct people they won't shorten it. My husband is named Richard and he goes and has always gone by Richard. On the rare occassion when people try to call him Rich, Rick, or whatever he just corrects them and it hasnt' been a issue for him.

I would certainly not let anyone call me by a name I didn't want them to. So if people allow others to do this, it must not bother them that much to be called by a nn.

  • I don't think Lorali looks like it would be pronounced like Lorelei.  It looks like Lor-a-lee, which is what I would say if I saw it.

  • I agree with others - teach her that her name is lorali and people will call her that. My niece Gwendolyn ::eyeroll:: doesn't let anyone call her Gwen.
