Excessive peeing (4 yr old boy) ?

B has been PT'd for about 1. 5 yrs, and hasn't had any accidents or issues in well over a year.  Lately he's been peeing/going to the bathroom a lot, but I hadn't realized just how much til today.....he was at daycare today and the DCP told me he went 18 times.  This was between  8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The dr.'s office is closed, I'll call in the morning.....but what would you think is going on.  He says it feels fine, no pain/burning.  He also says it's white instead of yellow - and no red/pink.

  • Type 1 Diabetes can cause excessive urination.  Our friends just had their 2 year old diagnosed and that was the first sign.

Ugh.  You *made* me google. ;)

He goes frequently, but not large quantities, so hopefully its not diabetes.  But thanks for responding.

DD was doing this recently. My brother has juvenile onset diabetes so I was concerned but she wasn't excessively thirsty so I wasn't real concerned.

Pedi did a culture on a urine sample and she did not have an infection. Pedi seemed unconcerned and said frequent urination is something that often "pops up" at this age. There is no medical reason for it and she said it usually stops on it's own.

Yes, excessive urination is a sign of diabetes but don't jump to conclusions until you've talked to the pedi (especially because it doesn't sound like he has other symptoms excessive thirst, weight loss, etc.).

ETA: here's info on what I am talking about (although if you are googling you probably read this :)

Pollakiuria: Mostly affects children between the age of 3-8 years, and causes frequent daytime urination, sometimes up to 10-30 times a day, usually with very small amounts of urine being produced at each time. Children with pollakiuria usually do not have other symptoms, and it is not known what causes it, although it may be linked to stress. No treatment is necessary and symptoms usually go away after about 3 months. It is also called Extraordinary Daytime Urinary Frequency Syndrome.

  • Thanks EMT.

Maybe it's the stress thing....he starts preschool next week and this is his first experience with a structured setting away from home, and he hasn't been in daycare in over a year now (just goes one day/week as a fun day with DCP's kids).

So, I'll still have him checked tomorrow, and hopefully it goes away quickly, or at least they are able to work with him at preschool.

Now I feel like a jerk for making you worry!  It's just the first thing that pooped into my head.  Sorry :(

no no no, don't worry.  I would have went there anyhow. lol.  I really do/did want to hear all possibilities. I really appreciate you throwing that out there.

  • My DS did this awhile back, maybe shortly after he turned 3.  I took him to the Dr and they ruled out urinary infection etc.. and then Dr said that sometimes during growth spurt, the bladder can have spasms that make it feel like they need to pee all the time.  I can't remember for certain how long it lasted for my DS, but I think it was about 2 weeks.
  • Is he peeing a lot each time or just a little?  I wonder if he is emptying as much as he should be each time he goes.

It's just a little.  It is nearly less than a minute from when he walks in to when he flushes (he pulls his pants up after flushing - so that minute is clothes down, sit down, pee, get up, flush).
