So frustrated!

Due to budget cuts, my school district laid off 850 teachers. All were hired back except for about 65. I am number 56. Trying to keep my options open I took an intervention position at my old site from 7:45-11:15 Monday-Thursday. Come to find out I am now making less than I was by working part-time than when I had not worked at all collecting unemployment! The school district takes out more taxes so now. I am working (and it isnt as easy as the job was said to be) and making less money than when I was at home. How does that make any sense! I made more money in college as a lfieguard than I do now with a teaching credential and Masters degree. Things will work out, they always do, but it still makes me feel defeated.

 Vent over...the job search continues.

  • Maybe things will get better.  What about doing some tutoring for extra money? Do you atleast get health benefts?

  • Dh has a stable job so we are good on that end and covered with benefits. We will make it ok even with my itnervention salary, its just the principle of the situation. I am making less money working than when I wasnt makes no sense to me!

  • The way the unemployment system works doesn't make sense sometimes.  My sister was laid off and subed at the school once in a while.  She made less money when she subed than when she didn't work at all so she just started volunteering when she subed rather than got paid for it.  Doesn't make sense to me.  Not very encouraging for people to take jobs that are available.

  • So frustrating! I know where you're coming from, I was laid off the year before last and took a part time job at another school. The part time job pays way less than unemployment but unemployment here just subtracted my pay and paid me the rest of what I normally got. Does it work differently in your state? Of course then my unemployment ran out, but that's a different story. I hope you get a new teaching job soon!
