So we started giving DS formula in addition to BM because he was having so many tummy issues and it seemed to have helped. We were giving him the Similac Sensitive and although it helped some he had still be doing REALLY bad at night and sometimes during the day (Crying/screaming/fussing for 4-5 hours straight). On Saturday, I went and bought him the Similac Sensitive Soy (DH has always had issues with milk so I thought maybe J inheirited it) and since then he's shown a big improvement. Now DH is saying that because of some article he read online titled "Soy making boys gay" (due to the estrogen in it) he is having mixed feelings about continuing to give him that formula.
Does anyone have any information on this that maybe they got from their pedi or from personal experience. Everything online gives mixed opinions.
TIA!
Re: Soy formula for boys....
Seriously? Was this article written in a credible science journal? I can tell you that my husband has been on Soy since birth, and he for sure is not gay. The only formula that finally worked for Spencer was Soy, Similac Soy to be more exact. Science has proven that one cannot turn gay, yet it is an aspect that one is born with. Honestly, I am sure that your priority is to ensure that your baby is as comfortable as possible; if a child does end up being gay, I am willing to put money on the fact that it is not due to the formula he/she was given at birth.
Be careful what you read on the internet, if you have any questions on anything related to the baby call your pedi?s office; the nurses/doctors are the best resources!

I honestly have no idea WTF he read it but he's driving me up the friggin wall. I tried pulling up credible articles for him to read today and most say that there is no study that proves the hormone imbalace to be true. For now he is sticking to his arguement that it has estrogen in it and therefore will turn LO in to girly boy. UGH!
I figured maybe if I could give him some personal stories he's STFU :] cause if it's helping my kid sleep at night and he's not screaming bloody murder (like he's in pain) when he cries I'm giving it to him!

Too funny! Just give it to him, or tell him to come up with a better solution. The pedi is going to tell him that if it is helping him, then give it to him. Spencer is a very rough boy....I assure you he is not a girly boy, even at 21 months! If the baby is sleeping and happy, why would he even question it? Men are so silly sometimes!

ok... I know it's not supposed to be funny, but I literally LOLed picturing you and Alexis having this conversation because it sounds so ridiculous!! I've never read anything like that either. If Jose is happy with soy milk, you just keep on giving it to him and tell Alexis to put up or shut up! Unless he has a better solution, he needs way more than a shoddy "internet article" as ammunition! Ay Alexis... lol
So I went and bought one of those bottles of the ready made and started giving it to him on Saturday and he's been sleeping MUCH better so far and just seems much happier over all. This morning he was up and "playing" for about 2 hours. It was awesome.

Last night while we were bathing J he started making fun of his little baby boobies. Said they were getting big because of the soy milk. Really, babe? Really?! I know he was joking but still!
I'd never heard about that theory either but if you google it there are TONS of links.

LMFAO!!!! I think our husbands were separated at birth. Once Anth gets something in his head there is NO changing his mind. Damn stubborn, they are.
I just can't picture my little nephew screaming in pain
Poor baby. Thankfully the soy milk is at least helping. I'm definitely going to research this whole "soy milk = girly boy" theory.
Just when you think you've heard it all!!
I agree with Dawn- if you want to keep on breastfeeding I would first recollect what you are eating, it can be something too greasy for him to digest or just something you never would think would give him colic. If the soy milk is helping with the tummy and sleeping keep doing it. The last thing you both need is a cranky household.
I will make sure to kick your DH ass when I see him tonight when I pick up Mario! Soy milk making a kid gay- aye dios! How about you have him call the Pedi and see what the pedi says on his fabulous article! BTW- did Alexsis drink soy milk when he was younger or what did his mom feed him since he also had tummy issues?? Did he turn out gay- I think not...
Your doing the right thing Tine hang in there and I hope J is feeling better!!
Like Yvette said, MIL has read the research on soy and it does increase the estrogen. It won't make him gay, but Alexis probably read about soy products leading to enlarged breasts in men. However, this depends on the amount of soy product being consumed and, like with everything, the research is mixed b/c there are many positive benefits to consuming soy. If Jose has a milk protein allergy and does have to drink soy formula/soy milk, talk to your doc about your concerns and Alexis' concerns about soy products.
I remember reading stuff about boys growing up to have boobs because drinking soy as babies caused them to produce too much estrogen or something like that, but not that it caused them to be gay. I don't have enough info on it to quote exactly what I read. But who knows if that is even true. I would trust a Dr before believing a magazine article.
I'll add in though that if you decide to FF or continue suplementing with formula, I highly recommend Good Start. It is extremely easy to digest. Adrianna has been on it since birth and she has never once had an episode of unconsolable crying, spitting up or gas.
When Nicky was a baby I started him on Enfamil Lipil and he was sooooo fussy. I chalked it up as colic and kept feeding it to him and he wound up developing a milk allergy at 8 weeks old and had to go on the super expensive hypoallergenic stuff. When he was diagnosed with the allergy my Dr toldme that 80% of babies that have problems with lactose will also develop problems with soy.
The funny thing is I recently heard that soy products (too much of them) had adverse affects on GIRLS! But from what I read the amount of soy you have to be eating has to be incredibly high. It was in a recent parent's magazine. I will see if I can dig up the article.
Personally, I don't think anything can turn anyone gay! Its either you are born that way or you aren't. But as the dad of a boy I guess I can understand his worry. Its a macho man thing.
Men seem to develop the most interesting worries and thought processes when they become parents.
