1st Trimester

Dopplers

What kind do you have, where did you buy it, and how much did it cost? I didn't do it last time b/c I figured I'd be OK until I could feel the baby kick, but she never really kicked much and when she was born her heart rate was dangerously erratic. I'm pretty sure I'll be a wreck if this baby is the same, and especially as we approach DD's gestational age at birth. So I want one!

Re: Dopplers

  • I bought a sonoline b from amazon. You have to know not to panic if you cannot find it right away though. I found mine no problem the first time i tried but not so easily the second time. I love the one i bought and definitely recommend it.

  • I got mine from Amazon, the Sonoline B with 3mhz probe. I've been able to find the HB consistently since 9w6d. I'm also about 112 lbs so there's very little cushion to listen through. It can be very hard to find until 12-14 weeks, so if you freak out easily, I would wait until 2nd tri to buy one. Plus, if it does work for you early, it's addicting.

  • Yeah, I certainly wouldn't stress if I didn't hear it early on...my tummy isn't what it used to be since having DD, so there's quite a bit of cushioning there lol. I'm honestly more concerned with being able to check on baby if things go south the way they did with DD. I mean, my water broke at 6 in the morning and she was born by 12:30 b/c of her distress. I worry that I won't have the water breaking this time around to let me know there's a problem. I'll definitely check out the sonoline, I was looking at the Hi Bebe, but the Sonoline's a lot cheaper!
  • You would be able to note if the HR was increasing/decreasing with each contraction, but unless you are an L&D nurse...it really wouldn't mean much. You need a strip to see distress, not a doppler.
  • I bought the Sonoline B 3 mhz for $53 on amazon.com.  I got my baby's heartbeat with it at 9 weeks, 2 days (although that's early for anyone and probably not because of the doppler itself).  It works GREAT, has a loud speaker and you can still plug in headphones.  Some of the reviews on amazon weren't glowing, but I've had nothing but success.  It doesn't say it online but it does come with a small packet of ultrasound gel to get you started.  I've head you can also use plain aloe vera gel...it won't hurt the probe on the doppler.

I should add that I've definitely got some extra padding in the stomach area so it wasn't because I'm a stick that I found it early.
