Who posted about the $5 superhero capes from Etsy?

I didn't bookmark the site and I want to order some for Sam's birthday.

Does anyone remember the person or the site?

    Thank you!

EMT, how difficult was it to make them?  Looking back, would you make them again or buy them ?  I'm not an expert sewer, but I can make curtains and other simple things like that.  DS2's bday is at the end of Oct.

They weren't hard to make...just time-consuming. I didn't see a link to the etsy site on that post (I didn't read it again before I posted it here) but the ones I made "sound" way cuter ;).

Here's the site I used...I probably spent more than 5 per cape though...maybe $100 on everything (for 15 capes) but I bought way too much fabric.

  • Thanks!

Yours were lined?  I think the other ones were single ply (if that's how you'd say it).  What did you spend per yard on fabric?  There is a fabric wholesale by me where I could probably get it for $3-5 per yard.

I love that site you posted and that you can personalize them with different logos for girls too.

You did a great job.  I bet they were a huge hit!  I thought a link was posted too and I searched on Etsy and found nothing even close to that price.

Hmmm, I better decide soon!  I may just make them...

  • One more thing, EMT!

Did you buy the pattern from that site or did you make your own?

    Just made my own.

I think 3 was the cheapest I found for the fabric.  I think the pink fabric was 3 because it was on clearance.  It was shiny and stretchy so a tad harder to work with but the shiny made it more cape-like. The red/black and purple were ~5 or 6 per yard, if I remember correctly.  That was the cheapest I could find.

Took me about a week to complete all of them but my mom helped me and we only worked on them at night.

  • Those are cute!

I just called my  mom and she said she would help me if I needed it, so I think I am going to do it!  The only hard part I forsee is waiting for the final guest count and getting them all done.

Thanks for posting the pics and for the link.  I'm excited now!

Good luck!  I'd love to see/hear how they turn out.

Oh yeah and I did not do the stitching on all the detail of the emblems like the link did. And I didn't do that zigzag stitch. I just went around the border of the emblems when sewing them on the capes (if that makes sense). it's cuter the way she did it but it saved me time to not to all that detail work. And my kids wear theirs a lot and nothing has fallen off or anything ;)

  • I made DS a cape, and it didn't involve any sort of a pattern.

I think I used 3/4 yard of each fabric-- red and blue stiff satin. It was on clearance at Joann's for about $2.50 a yard.

Marked the center point and used a piece of string to make a perfect half-circle. Sewed together right sides in, turned it inside out. For the neck, I used a saucer to cut a notch for the neck and used wide seam binding to finish it. You can either tie it on or (what I did) stitch on some Velcro.

  • Thanks, Lari!  It sounds cute with the red and blue satin.

My mom has the boys and she said Sam turned Max's bib into a cape and was so entertained by it, so I know he will flip for these.

I need to get busy.  I think I have 24 or so to make.

  • saving to steal later! thanks.
  • I like it without the logos, because it's good for a wider variety of characters that way. Not only is it a hero cape, but it's been used for a knight's outfit and a magician's cape, too.

  • I am thinking if I get the capes made early enough that I could do the first initial of their name.  I can't imagine that taking very long or being very difficult.

Love it! The only problem is (if you are making the capes I posted) you put the emblem on before you sew the cape together. But, I found the cutting/pinning (prep before sewing) to take the longest. Also, I think when you are cutting the felt, the letter will have to be backward to come out correctly (the "S" in superman is backward on the pattern).

  • This makes me want to make one for DS. So cute!
