...get a traditional gift bag (candy, favors, etc) or a book + treat as a favor for a bday party?

I'm not too enamored with the goodie bag things I'm finding. I'm thinking of giving each kid a book plus a treat as a favor.

Next questions:

for the treat: candy apple, caramel apple or apple cider donut?

for the book: paperback or board book (something like Dr. Suess' 10 Apples on Top) for 3-4 y.o kids?

 

I factored it out and it would both be the same amount of $$ at the end.

Board book and caramel apple for sure. Target Dollar Spot often has books that are seasonal, so you might be able to find some to go with the theme of the party.

Book and a treat.  For 3-4 year olds, I would go with the Dr Suess and paperback - at that age, they are past the riping up of books for the most part.  As far as the treat, I think a candy or caramel apple might be too hard for some kids unless its all precut.  I don't love the donut idea unless you are eating them hot and fresh.
