Baby Names

Opinions on Callan??

DH and I can't seem to get on the same page with names. We made lists and both of our styles are just all over the place. We both had the name Callan (rhymes with Allen) on our list.....I really do love it, (sounds great with our last name, not common but also not too "out there") but lately having second thoughts. We're not sharing with friends and family this time, so I thought I'd get some opinions on here. Is this a horrible mistake for our baby boy?? TIA!

Re: Opinions on Callan??

  • I don't care for it much...it looks like Callahan with missing letters or the popular Twilight-name, Cullen (which seems to have inspired a few spin offs).

  • You know, if you both love it, then go with it!  I think it's a fine name.  I am not sure of the meaning but that is what I look for too.  You are probably having second thoughts because there are soooo many names out there to choose from. My hubby and I are going through that with a little girls name.  It's so hard.

  • I have a friend with the name and have always loved it! It helps he's a great and fun guy as well! I had thought about using the name as well, until my SIL named her DS Colin and I thought it might be too close for the family.
  • It isn't awful, but I don't really like it. Like braveangel said, it looks like a spin-off of Cullen. It also seems made up, which is a turn-off to me. Otherwise, I can't really pinpoint why I don't like it... I just don't.

    What about Kellan instead?

  • I don't see why anyone would think it was "a horrible mistake." I actually much prefer Callan to Colin/Collin and think there's nothing bad about it.

I agree with all of this.

  • I actually do like Kellan as well, but that got a veto from DH. We saw it in a baby name book at his aunts house, I believe the origin was Australian, but the meaning is "strong in battle".....I think that we both liked the meaning behind it even more because we're both combat veterans. I am slightly embarassed to admit the we also watch NCIS LA and it is the last name of a character on the show (the show was just the first time we had heard the name).

I had the same doubts with our first son and his name, but we stuck with our original decision and don't regret it. I am just soooo indecisive.

  • I think that it is a nice name. There is nothing wrong with it at all. If you guys both like it and it sounds good with your last name, I would seriously consider it. I also think that having second thoughts is totally normal. Picking a name is a big deal, so it feels like a very big commitment.
  • There was a guy on Laguna Beach named Callan and I think that may have something to do with the recent jump in rank.  I actually like it.

It's okay- I don't think Callan is a horrible mistake, and it doesn't make me cringe. It's just nms :)

  • I think it's a great name. :) I think it would be cute on a little boy. I think we all go through that moment where we're rethinking that name we once chose and are wondering if it was a mistake. I did it and I'm glad I stuck to the original decision because I get compliments on her name to this day (she's three, almost four). :)

  • I like it. Have you thought about spelling it like Callen since it rhyms with Allen? I like, either way you spell it, I think it rolls nicely off the tongue.

  • This is our boys name, if LO is a boy!  Clearly, we love it.  Its been decided on for a while. I dislike trendy names, but this isn't even in the top 1000 and I love the NN Cal.

  • I have a friend who has a 2 1/2 year old named this, but they spell it Kallan. I absolutely love the name! But, I have an awesome association with it, too. He's one of the coolest, most polite little boys I know. I don't think you can go wrong with it.

This!  I like the name a lot.  Like a cooler more modern version of Allen. (Ha! Cool + Allen = Callen)

  • Thanks for all of the input ladies! DH came home last night and mentioned the name Griffin. I never would've thought he would like that name, but it is another one we will consider. It does kind of remind me of "Family Guy" though
