So, after some wonderful advice from this board and many others while researching, I've been putting together my CD wishlist. Would you CD mamas mind taking a look and seeing what you think I have overlooked, any other things I should add. (Too many of certain sizes? Not enough of others?)
-2 dozen infant prefolds
-8 XS Thirsties covers
-4 Little Joeys Rumparoos AIOs
-6 Kissaluvs size 0 Fitteds
-6 XS Bumgenius AIO
-2 Wahmies Pail Liners
-2 wetbags
Obviously, I've only started stocking up for the newborn stage. To what age do you think this stash could get me? Do you think the Lil Joey's and Bumgenius are repetitive, or should I supplement with pockets?
I decided that fitteds would be a good way to get DH eased into the process. I wanted to get enough PF that I could use, but have some fitteds for when he is doing diaper changes, or those middle of the night changes.
So, any more suggestions??
TIA!
Re: Check my CD wishlist, what else do I need?
I don't think you need that many covers and I'd probably buy the Thirsties duos, since they are adjustable for two sizes (xs/sm or m/l). I think, if you got 4 duos covers, that would be good till ~18 lbs, which could be most of the first year depending on baby's growth.
It also seems like you have a lot of xs AIOs. I know some people use BGs for nighttime, but at the newborn stage, they will be waking constantly, so you probably won't need special dipes for that reason. I use AIOs when we go out, but we didn't do much of that at the newborn stage either. Maybe invest in AIOs or pockets that are adjustable size-wise or wait till later to stock up on AIOs. That would save you a lot of $$.
And don't forget snappis! Just a few will do.
Ok great. This is the exact feedback I need, so I know if I'm overdoing it or not. So I will reduce my covers and go with the Duos, and less of the XS AIOs.
Snappi's too! Almost forgot.
i was planning to start with just 2 doz infant prefolds and 4 thirsties duo sz 1 covers. planning to wash every other day.
then i got 2 kissaluv sz 0 fitteds off CL, and a few thirsties sized covers (i think 2 xs and 2 sm) that a friend gave me for free. i think the consensus is that i now have too many covers! i'm keeping the xs just in case the duos are too small at the very beginning, but otherwise will try to sell the sized covers.
AIOs won't fit right away (eta: oops, sorry, i was thinking of the one-size AIOs - the xs ones should be fine) - i think baby needs to be more like 10lb before they start to fit, but i would probably get the one-size AIO's instead of the sized ones - or just try one of each and see which you like better, since they'll fit differently.
also, instead of 4 rar and 6 bg's right away, you might want to just get one of each first and see how you like them - that's what everyone recommends, at least, since you never know how they'll fit your LO!
i plan to use just PF's (and try the fitteds, now that i have them and got them for cheap) for the nb stage, and try pockets and AIO's later, when I won't need to buy as many. and who knows, we may love PFs so much we don't have to get the more expensive ones! maybe just a few when other people need to change our LO and aren't comfortable with PF's - i figure MH will learn - if we start with PF, he won't know any better
agree with everyone else.
I would cut down to 5 max on covers and duos will last you longer. Not sure if they get in the way of the cord or not... we started out using cheap-y proraps but he grew out of those really really quickly and his cord fell off fast.
re: AIO: I agree - they are much easier for dads (and skeptical grandmas), but lots of dads on this board handle prefolds just fine so it's really up to you and waiting might be a good idea but I know what it's like to want to get everything ready!! I assume you picked the Joey's because they have newborn size? If you are going to get those and BGs I would skip the KLO fitteds. I am pretty much in the minority but I didn't love those and AIO will be easier. You *might* get more use out of some size small BG's - they seemed small enough to fit a NB if you ask me, but then again my son was 9lb at birth.
PP are right, the one size pockets or all in ones probably won't fit right away, so it's not a bad idea to get some sized AIOs if you think you want them and don't mind spending the money for them.
i have 3 snappis - from what i hear, 2-3 should be enough.

Thanks so much for all the input! I haven't actually bought anything yet, but I am putting together a wishlist so I don't forget all that I want to get. So, I've reduced the number of covers. Should I get some small size covers as well? And do Thirsties covers work well over fitteds?
Also, I think I'll only do 2 Lil Joeys, and stick with a few Bumgenius AIOs, just to get started.
About PFs, should I get a mixture of newborn (GMD orange trim) and infant sized (yellow trim)? I've heard that the newborn size works better when they are really tiny, without adding too much bulk. Although I know these probably won't last very long, it might be nice to have about a dozen on hand...what do you think?
I love the thirsties duo covers the size 1 says it goes up to 18 lbs but i think most parents find it goes up to about 15-16 lbs in reality... miss A is 15.5 lbs and still in size 1 duo covers and GMD yellows if you plan on reselling your stash after baby is out of diapers then you should know that the sized thirsties covers don't hold their value as well as the duos since those are newer and more popular
I can't speak for other types of fitteds but we have some goodmamas and they are really bulky. i have to use the size 2 duo covers w/the goodmamas
i know they say to use diapers w/a cord notch until the umbilical cord stump falls off but i found that w/the orange GMDs the diaper was just below her belly button anyway so it didn't rub.
i think the yellow GMDs will be pretty big on your LO as a newborn if you have an average sized baby that is 7-8lbs. i know that miss A is really really tiny but she wore her orange edge GMDs for 12 wks (about 11.5 lbs) and now she is 9 months old and still in the yellows (barely).
re: AIOs that are one-sized...i think she was able to fit the organic BG one size diaper around 9-10 lbs or so. it was still huge but it worked.
