Clips? Bows? Headbands?
We use clips, but I am always having to fix them. DD would freak out when I tried to put a plastic headband on her, but she finally let me, and then it was always getting messed up too. I tried a stretchy fabric headband too but it seemed like it would just slide off. Sometimes we do pigtails with those tiny little hairbands, but in the summer I don't just because if she is out in the sun, I don't want her scalp getting burnt where I part her hair (and a hat doesn't go over pigtails).
I think we'll have to stick with clips, but it would be nice if I could be a little more creative!
Re: What do you use in DD's hair?
Barettes, rubber bands, headbands, stretchy headbands, clips, bows... we do some of everything I guess! In summer I like to pull the front back in a barette and then put the rest in a ponytail or braid so it's off her neck in the heat. Right now she's really into headbands, so sometimes I do a headband with a ponytail in back if it's really hot.
We usually use the little hairbands and do pigtails, a ponytail, or the little hair poofs like in my siggy pic. Or braids.
Her hats will fit over the ponytail, braids or low pigtails. They just kind of rest of top of the poofs.
Very rarely, we'll do barrettes. I haven't tried many headbands -- probably b/c I find them annoying, myself.

Mostly braids and barrettes, along with those little alligator clips.
For DD's part, I just spray sunscreen directly on her scalp. She's got a natural part anyway, so I have to do that regardless of how I do her hair.
