I like Alyssa. I know it was really popular several years back (there are a bunch of 12-14 year old Alyssa's right now) but it seems less common now. I'm not a huge fan of Avery. It seems too trendy to me, and I still think of it as a boy's name because I knew a few male Avery's about my age.
I do not like Alina at all. I can't even tell how to pronounced it - uh-lee-nuh or uh-lie-nuh.
I do like these other similar names - Alisa (pronounced uh-lee-suh), Aliya, Elise, Alana, Alaina/Elaina/Elena, and Allison.

I like them both. Alina is not my favorite- I'm not really sure how to pronounce it.
I like Alyssa a little more than Avery, since it's less trendy, more definitely feminine, and I have a best friend named Alyssa (I'm biased ) Avery is nice too though.
I'm not really a fan of Alina, and Avery is getting really old to me- way too trendy and I'm sick of hearing it. I think Alyssa is pretty. It's not too trendy or common, and I just think it sounds nice.
Thanks everyone for the feedback. Alina would be pronounced uh-lee-nuh. I like it because it's not popular. I guess there's a reason it's not popular though... my husband wasn't too keen on it so I guess I'll take it off the list.
Alyssa was the first name my husband and I agreed on. My only concern is that it peaked in popularity about 10 years ago, and I'm worried that it sounds a bit dated.
We both like the name Avery, but I'm hearing it a little too often now at grocery stores when people are talking to their little girls. I'm worried that it's too trendy and on the rise. Also, some people (like my parents) still think of it as a boy's name.

I didn't think it was either, but when I looked it up on the SS website, it was #19 last year and it's been in the top 20 for the last 10 years. Avery is actually less popular at #32, but it seems like it's on the rise.
I like Alyssa, but I grew up with a number of girls named Alyssa and they all seemed to be from really poor or low-class families, so I have a perception of the name as one chosen by parents with low education levels. I think that may have been a regional stigma, though. Since moving to Chicago, I've heard it perceived as a snobby name.
I don't like Avery at all, for any reason.
But, honestly, both are decent names; you can't really go wrong. I think I would recommend Alyssa first, only because it's less popular/trendy right now.

It was listed as a "low education" name in Freakonomics as well, which was one of my concerns. I keep talking myself out of every name. Ugh!
Alyssa - Kind of dated, but it definitely sounds pretty!
Avery - Too trendy, too popular, too boyish, too last-namish, too meh.
My niece is named Alayna. I didn't like it at first because I prefer traditional names, old fashioned names, etc. but it has grown on me and she has a unique, but not too unique and pretty name. I don't know about Alina - it isn't a bad name.
I agree that Alyssa is dated, Avery is too trendy, and I just don't like Alina. There is a little girl down the street named Alina, and she is cute, but something about the name rubs me wrong.
If you like 'A' names, have you considered Amelia, Abigail, or Audrey? All of those were on our short list (and we used Amelia as a mn).

Alyssa. Avery is too popular and too unisex for my taste. I personally know 3 baby Avery's born in the past year, 2 girls, one boy.
Alina would probably get mistaken for Elena.
