Would love to know how accurate the weight estimates and/or measurements were for anyone who had them done. At our appt about 2 weeks ago, the fundal height was about 2-3 days ahead, so pretty good. At last Friday's appointment, about 2.5 weeks ahead. YOWSERS. They sent us for an u/s this morning to make sure there wasn't something going on, and to get a size estimate/measurements. It's definitely the baby and not extra amniotic fluid or anything like that, but I'm curious about your experiences with the weight estimates! How was it estimated for you (fundal height, u/s, practitioner measurement, something else) and how accurate was it? Did you deliver early/induce/have a C-section because of the estimates?
Re: Measuring ahead and weight estimates
They told me I was dating almost two weeks ahead and that my baby was bumping 10 lbs according to the ultrasounds.
They induced me at 41 weeks and I never actually went into labor on my own. I got to enjoy a c-section because I only ever made it to 3 cm with no progress in sight.
Baby weighed 8 lbs. 11 oz.
I was told around 38 weeks by measuring that my son would be at least 9 lbs.
I was told, based on an ultrasound, 10 days past my due date, that my son would be 8 lbs 6 oz.
He was born 15 days past his due date weighing 6 lbs 13 oz. I hold no stock based on what they guess, and would not induce or schedule a c-section early due to this.
I always measured 2 weeks ahead with Ethan and 3 weeks ahead with Jack. I had Ethan via c-section (breech) at 38 weeks and he was 8 lbs 2 oz. I had Jack at 38 weeks 3 days (planned c-section) and he was 9 lbs 2 oz. So it appears if I had gone to 40 weeks with both boys, I could have had 10 pounders.
I went to a different practice the first time around and they were never really proactive when it came to the end of my pregnancy. I was very concerned that Ethan was breeched and they never did an u/s to confirm. It wasn't until I was in labor and at the hospital when we found out. I went to a different group with Jack and they were very proactive and were very concerned that I was going to have another big baby. That's one reason that they delivered me before 39 weeks because of my past history and my measuring big.
Aerin always measured 4 weeks ahead. She was born via c-section at 39 weeks weighing in at 8 lbs 13 oz--big baby but not overly huge.
Also, when she was inside she was head down with her feet spread eagle (like a frog). I think this attributed to the measurements.
My OB pretty much refused to give me an estimate since she said they were almost always wrong.
That being said, I measured "fine & on time" but delivered 1.5 weeks early at 6 lb 12 oz.
With Bailey all my high risk u/s measured him 1.5-2weeks ahead and my fundal height was always 2-3 days ahead. BUT my doctor doesn't induce or do c/s just b/c of u/s measurements since they can be off +/- 2lbs. The only reason I had these u/s was b/c of PTL issues. My office doesn't do growth u/s unless something comes up.
So the day I was to be induced ast 40w5d, my water broke at home. I never did progress pass 1cm and Bailey never dropped into the birth canal at all. So that's why I ended up with a c/s and he was 9lb 12oz. I will say just b/c I couldn't deliver that big of a baby there were several 9lbs on my pp hallway and I was the only one that had a c/s. One lady next door to me had a 9lb 15oz baby vaginally so it can be done. Personally I would not be induced/have a c/s based off of u/s measurements.
I measured 1.5 weeks ahead. I was enormous. They said Carter would be pushing 9 lbs. When he arrived at 37w3d, he was 6lbs. 2 oz. When they declared his weight, I was like "what??? weigh him again, that can't be correct". Sure enough, 6lb 2oz.
So take it with a grain of salt.
