If you took the paci away on the late side...

How long did it take your DC to adjust with their sleep? We had to take DS's lovey away last week (he sucked it/used it as a pacifier and the dentist told us it was already shifting his teeth) and while he is doing really well in terms of not being upset, it is taking him FOREVER to fall asleep for bed and naps. He used to be asleep by 8, and now isn't falling asleep until 11 or so.

  • At least a good week, and then it got better. I was so sad, because I knew he was sad about it, but after a week, he totally forgot about it. Hang in there, it will get better! FWIW it has been 6 months and we saw the dentist yesterday, and everything looked good!

  • Like PP, about a week and then he forgot about it. He found it funny to throw it over the side of the crib knowing I would usually pick it up for him. He found this especially amusing when it would get wedged between the side of the crib and the wall. I eventually got fed up and stopped retrieving them and he did forget all about it shortly after.

  • She didn't take anytime to adjust. We took the paci away 4 months before her 4th birthday.

Could it be time to get rid of his nap? If DD takes a nap (which I make her at least once a week) she is up until 10pm. Without the nap, she's out almost before we have finished her story.

And I will say, I think she dropped her nap right after we took the paci away. We just do an hour of quiet time with the blinds pulled closed while watching a movie.

  • We took it away soon after he turned 3.  His nap disappeared pretty much right away.  That sucked, but it meant by bedtime, he was falling asleep quickly within about 3 days.  It's been a year now and he'll nap without it, but only a couple of times a week instead of the daily one.

  • Thanks everyone! His nap is already only 2 or 3 times a week...as long as I can hang onto "quiet time" hopefully we will be good!

  • The second night was the worst.  I'd say it took 3-4 days.  She was three when she traded it for a bandaid.  DS1 never took a paci.

  • It took a few weeks. She didn't cry for it, but it just took her a lot longer to fall asleep.

The good news is that you can tell her teeth are already shifting. THe pacifier had definitely pushed them forward.

  • Nap dissaperaed but he does an hour of quiet time. Sadness was gone in two days. Sleep patterns took longer, perhaps a full month to return to normal. He woke at night for a couple weeks and it took him hours to settle down for a few weeks. He was 3.9 when he gave it up.
  • It took a solid week, but now she sleeps better than she had in like 6 mos. that and we starting doing away with naps around the same time.

  • Also, after just a month w/o the paci her teeth started shifting back.

  • It took us about 2 nights before he wasn't upset about it anymore.  Does your little one have a lovey toy that he's attached to?  If not maybe a stuffed animal that he can have for comfort.  We just told our DS that since he was in a big boy bed he didn't need a paci anymore and that paci's were for babies.  He did ok after the 2 nights and never asked about it again.  I know at that age too my little one started having a hard time falling asleep at night if he had a nap during the day...can he go with no nap or a shortened one so that he's not so awake at night?  Just another idea....now that our DS is four we struggle with getting him to sleep if he had a nap..we try to avoid the naps unless really needed.  Good luck...I know this transition can be hard!
