Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Does it bug you when your baby smells like other people's perfume?

I think I'm just uptight. But I can't stand smelling my baby after MIL holds him. He retains a strong perfume smell until his clothes are changed AND he has a bath. Yuck! I'm obsessed with smelling his sweet little fuzzy head when we're snuggling, so it annoys the crap out of me. I'm not a perfume wearer, but if I was, I really don't see the need for it when you're going to just go sit around with your grandkids. Am I alone here? We tried telling her with our first that newborns are bothered by perfume, but she either forgot or doesn't care.

  • i dont like it either but havent had an experience as bad as yours.  my mil smokes and she will rue the day if ds ever smells like smoke.

  • This bugs me so much because i love perfume and i wont wear it for the sake of my baby, so when someone else gets her all stinky, i get so angry! I now ask everyone to put a blanket over their chest/shoulders before holding her. I don't care if it ticks them off- i hate the thoughts of her breathing in someones perfume!

  • YES!!!  My MIL uses essential oils everyday because she feels they have special healing powers or something.  When she holds DS he reeks of whatever oil she lathered all over herself that morning!  Yuck!

  • It drives me nuts, too.  Not that I mind people wearing perfume....I just hate him smelling like 'other' people.  Makes me snobby, I guess!
  • ugh, yes! My mil smokes, not a lot, but still- and tries to mask it with perfume. Vomit.

This!  I'm so glad I'm not the only one, here I thought I was just being uptight or something.  It drives me crazy!

  • Yes, because I love breathing in her baby smell and can't stand it when it's overpowered by perfume.

  • YES! It bugs me a lot. SO far just my SIL and MIL do this, but it really bugs me. My mom was like...if you are going to be holding a baby, why would you put on strong perfume?

  • YES! YES! YES! and MIL smokes as well..so poor baby smells like perfume and cigarettes. YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I have the same problem with my MIL and SIL! I love them both, but they just wear soooo much perfume and I get stuck smelling it on LO for hours after they leave! I want to smell that baby smell on her, not their perfume Tongue Tied
  • My MIL wears the most god-awful perfume and smelled so strong yesterday...my lo completely smelled like her until we gave him a bath today. Drives me crazy. We actually (my husband, that is) asked her to stop wearing perfume when she comes over to visit.
  • Ugh, thank you! Glad I'm not the only one who thinks this... Of all the crap she is paranoid about with the babies, you'd think she wouldn't wear perfume. ::shrugs::

  • Glad to know I'm not the only one with a MIL who has a smoking + heavy perfume problem.  Her scent really bothers me (I don't quite remember it bothering me before I was pregnant, but post partum it drives me nuts. Its like I still have my pregnant nose. I hope it goes away... I can't ignore DD's clothes + blankets reeking for days after until I get around to washing them.
