bright yellow in breastfed spit up? reflux? something else?

DS spits up a lot just like my DD did. Unlike DD, we have not put him on zantac or anything for reflux, though starting to wonder if we need to.

In the last few weeks there have been 4 occasions where a small amount of bright yellow (egg yolk looking) stuff has been in his spit up...he does not seem extra bothered by it and does not seem otherwise sick at all.

Anyone had this? DD never did, but again, not sure if it is because she was on the zantac if this is a reflux symptom?

Thanks!!

  • Hmmm my knee jerk answer is colostrum but he's too old for that. Vitamin D drops? Swallowed mucus?

  • Sounds like mucus. My LO had a cold last week and there was mucus in her spit up. Poor kid.
  • I thought vitamin D drops the first time so stopped giving them to see if it happened again and it has kept happening so its not that...

He doesn't have a cold or seem stuffy at all so not sure about the mucus thing - doesn't seem like that would be it, but who knows.

I will ask the doc at his next appt if it doesn't seem to get worse or bothersome for him. I thought I read somewhere that yellow or green spit up can be a sign of severe reflux. He has been sleeping pretty awful and really squirmy like he has gas or something quite a bit lately so have been wondering if he needs the zantac like my daughter did but hate to medicate if he doesn't REALLY need it.
