I just read online that SIDS peaks around 2-4 months. This was extremely surprising to me as i thought it was most prevalent in newborns. I'm a huge worrywart and i have now freaked myself out! I'm sure i'll be losing sleep tonight watching my LO like a hawk.

I was under this impression also! I got an email about SIDS and read otherwise. Very scary!

DH was asking this question just today.  One book said this exactly, the other said it was greatest between 4 and 16 weeks, essentially the same thing.

I was reading an insert from the SwaddleMe blankets I bought and it said SIDS peaks around 2-4 months due to baby being able to roll over and being more mobile. Baby might roll onto his or her face/belly, but not have the neck control to move his or her head. Baby also might scoot into bumpers or pull blankets over face. Newborns just lay there, so if you do back sleeping, there is little chance a newborn will roll onto his or her face.

It lowers at 6 months which is why aap recommends LO room share that long.

Yeah, the risk goes down significantly at 4 months and then drops further at 6 months.  It doesn't completely go away until 1 year.

I have read in a few very reliable sources that normally healthy babies that sleep on their backs with a sleep positioner and don't have anything in their crib have extremely low risk. The sources all indicate that babies that have had health issues (especially breathing related) are most at risk.

You can always get a movement monitor for peace of mind; that's what I did.  We bought the Snuza Halo monitor.

My understanding is that the peak is 2-4 months, the risk does go down at about 6 months, but it's best to follow all safe sleep practices until at least 1yr when the risk is much lower.  I just do everything in my power to reduce the risk: Halo sleepsacks instead of loose blankets, no bumper or pillows, fan going, pacifier, no smoking and no co-sleeping.
