Baby Names

Maiden Name as First Name

We still don't know what we are having yet... but we are trying to narrow down names for both boys and girls.

I had this idea before getting pregnant about keeping my maiden name in our family.

What does everyone think of Finnegan as a boys first name?  Nick name would be Finn...

I'm obviously in love with the idea but my husband feels otherwise.

 Just getting some opinions.

Thanks!!

Re: Maiden Name as First Name

  • If it's a good last name, sure, and Finnegan is good.  I know baby Finns.   If your last name is awful, then no.  I once dated a guy with the last name Frickert.  That would have been awful.

And my maiden name has been used as a first name, but for a boy (we're having a girl.)

  • Last names as first names for boys is the big trend in naming right now, so it would fit right in. Finnegan is in the top 600, so though it is not common, it is a name people have heard. I really like it but it sounds weird with our last name so it is out for us.

  • I really like it :-)  My maiden name is Stewart but it's nms for a first name.  We're planning to use it as a mn if we have a boy.

  • I think Finnegan is a good first name. DS has a last name as his first name and both names I like for this baby are last names as well.

It all depends on the last name though, Finnegan is a win.

  • I like it, but I think of a dog because there was a show I watched as a kid and the dog's name was Finnegan, so I automatically think of Casey & Finnegan.

  • Meh. Finn wouldn't be too bad as a first name. Not my style, but not bad. Finnegan is just... I side with your hubby on this one. Plus, the decision has to be made together. :) Best of luck!

  • Love it!!!

My best friend gave her DD her maiden name as her first name, and its SUPER cute!!! I love the idea of keeping names in the family....

  • My DH's mn is his mother's maiden name.  Also an Irish name.  He hates it.  I would just name the baby Finn as a tribute to your family.
  • I like the sentiment, just don't like the name. Especially the nickname Finn.

  • I think it depends on the last name. My cousin named her little girl her maiden name (Seely) and at first I thought it was strange, but it's grown on me. I like Finn!

  • I like it, and I have a couple friends who did this.  One friend used "Chase" for her little girl and another friend used "Parker" for her little boy.

  • it's really not all that uncommon. i think it's cute, especially because it has special meaning to you and is not just a name you like.

a girl from our childbirth class just had a boy named finnegan about a week ago.
