DD starts preschool in the fall and I'd like to get her a "big girl backpack" that will hopefully last her through early elementary school. She's tall for her age, so I was thinking about getting this small one. But the thought of spending $40 on a bag is giving me hives. Is it really worth it? Do I need to make a trip to my local PBK store and check them out in person?
Re: PBK backpacks-- reviews?
I like them. They are made well and they have great pockets/sections.
My girls each have a smaller (preschool) one and a regular sized one. I had them personalized with their initials. This year, I ordered a lunchbox for DD#1 since she'll have lunch at preschool 2x per week.

DD has a small sized backpack from there. It can hold a lot & has great pockets. We really like it & it's of good quality. I was lucky & bought one when they went on sale. The new ones with the pink/browns are really cute. I'll be getting another one with dd2 is older.
FYI, in case you wondered, they don't have the preschool size in stores -- I stopped in and asked. You can only order them through the catalog/online.
I thought they were really nice, but I couldn't bring myself to spend that much. Instead I got DD1 a Skip Hop Zoo Pack for her toddler class this fall. They're adorable (we got the owl), perfectly sized for a preschooler, and it's a simple and nice enough backpack that I'm sure she'll use it for the next two years at least. They're only $20, too, which is nice, and they have matching lunch boxes that are toooo cute!
Like most of the preschool-sized backpacks I've seen, though, it's not big enough for, say, a folder if they need that kind of thing. DD1 will need to pack changing supplies and bring home art projects and that's about it so it's fine for her.
Plus, I figured there might be various PBK backpacks in DD1's classroom, but the zoo packs are a little less "known" and unique.
Maybe we'll do a PBK backpack in grade-school.

You know, I was expecting the same thing and being at our preschool for 2 years now (and it's a pretty pricey preschool), my kids are the ONLY ones with PBK backpacks! LOL!
