Happiest Baby on the Block?

Since so many of you have recommended this in the past, I wanted to go ahead and order it before baby arrives.  What did you find was the most beneficial?  just dvd?  dvd & cd? book?

I just don't know what I should order.  If I will want all 3 or really just the dvd?

Re: Happiest Baby on the Block?

  • DVD worked for us, we watched it twice and were pros (lol)!  You can also find free video clips on YouTube.  We sill use most of the 5 S's!
  • Loading the player...
  • Just the DVD, which I found at the public library. The book had WAY too much info and was not nearly as clear. We also purchased a waterfalls-type of white noise for 99 cents from iTunes, but A has never really needed it.

  • I think just the DVD is plenty.  MH and I took a class, where we got the DVD, but the class pretty much consisted of just watching the DVD, which we then also got to take home (we've never watched it again).  We do use the techniques we learned, but for us, watching the DVD once was plenty to understand them.

We also have a white noise and soothing sounds CD we bought separately, but haven't used yet.

  • I was cheap and just looked up the 5 S's online - never actually bought the DVD. Embarrassed We downloaded a bunch of free high quality white noise sounds and experimented with those until we found one that worked.
  • We got the book as a shower gift and I skimmed through to get the 5 S's. We use sucking (paci) and sound (white noise) the most, followed by side/stomach (but we flip him back onto his back once he's asleep to reduce SIDS). We stopped swaddling when he was 6 weeks old. We only were able to use the swing successfully twice. Usually, the swing makes him cry bloody murder. But he likes to be rocked. Sometimes carrying him in the Ergo is the best way to soothe him. For the white noise, I just downloaded a free white noise app for my phone and use that. He likes "white noise", "crickets", and "rain" the most now. When he was a newborn, he liked "beach" best.

  • JUST THE DVD.

I got the book but after fighting through half of it, I couldn't read anymore. The guy writes like a condescending aunt who takes an hour to tell you how to turn on the washing machine. Seriously, the book is SO SLOW. It was putting me to sleep and I couldn't take the torture. I never finished it. I knew I would never get DH to read it. So I ordered the DVD and we watched it. I can't say it helped much... But we didn't have a colicky baby. I think we used the 5 S's once or twice. But it did make us feel more prepared.
