Re: morning sickness POLL

  • I'm not going to go into detail because what I went through with HG is not all that common and I don't want to scare you - but holy freaking hell did I have morning sickness. Its the biggest reason we aren't even considering TTC again any time soon.

  • Nope.  Not with either one of the boys.  I was extremely dizzy with DS1, but that's about it.

  • I will preface this with the fact that I have stomach issues all of the time, but I had morning (usually early morning and early evening) sickness the entire time.  I did not gain a lot of weight until the end (last 4-6 weeks) when the sickness was not every day.  As ridiculous as it sounds, I got used to it because the anti-nausea meds either didn't work or mad me worse.  It became a normal thing, although I was glad it was gone, but I normally felt 100% better after throwing up.

I know this is not exactly what you want to hear, but you will live through it if you happen to have it.

  • DS - Yes.  All day everyday for 9 solid months.  Hospitalized three times during my pregnancy b/c of it.  No amount of medication helped.  Vomited the entire seventeen hours I was in labor.

DD1 - Yes.  Minor.  Only during the first trimester.  More nausea than anything.

DD2 - Yes.  More severe in the first trimester.  Nothing as bad as my first pregnancy but did not disappear until the very end.  Nothing alleviated it completely, but it was manageable.

  • Started at week 5, continued through week 16 and then all of my 3rd trimester.  That's why I only gained 31 pounds, with twins.  And it wasn't morning sickness either.  It was afternoon/evening sickness.  I wish all day could have been morning when I was having those bad days (i.e. every day).  :)
  • yea Joyco -- seems like very few people are actually sick only in the morning!
  • I put no, but I had what we called "evening blahs." I would feel stellar in the morning, then progressively more "blah" as the day went on. I only actually got sick one time, and it was kind of out of the blue. Like, laying on the couch, then running to the bathroom, then fine after I barfed. Weird. But eating small, constant amounts seemed to help with my stomach. It only ever bordered on nauseated when my stomach was actually empty.
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • Moderate-Severe the entire pregnancy with Abby. I only gained 18lbs and was on medication the entire time. It got "better" between 18-25 weeks but only if you consider feeling hungover all.the.time "better".

Mild-Moderate the entire time with Emily but with more spurts of Severe, especially early on. I chalk this up to not being able to lay down and rest when I really needed to, having to take care of a toddler. I'd just go and puke and keep on going. I also had weight gain issues but gained more toward the end. I'm back at my PP weight since 6 months.

The Hyperthyroidism exacerbates morning sickness and also complicates weight gain (of course). There were plenty of times I was threatened with being hospitalized for fluids and possibly a PICC line to get IV nutrition, I always begged my way out of it and just did my best not to OD on Zofran and keep up my fluids, one sip at a time.

Both times, within 3 hours of giving birth, it was like a cloud was lifted off of me. Exactly like when your hangover finally wears off and you're like "Hey, who wants to go to China Buffet!?"

  • I had all-day sickness that went from about 5 weeks-13 weeks.  I never yacked...just felt hung over 24/7.  A few things helped, but nothing really cured it.  The biggest help was sucking on jolly ranchers all day.
  • Weeks 6-10 were the worst for me for DD and weeks 5-9 for this pregnancy. I never threw up, but I was nauseous pretty much all the time. Like pp said, it felt like being really hungover all the time. I also had no appetite and some food aversions.

This is me exactly. I used to surreptitiously move the trash cans in the hallway closer to my classroom because I was always on the verge.  I never actually puked though.  Ditto the jolly ranchers.  I kept expecting one of my students to call me out on it but they never did.

  • I was really nauseous weeks 6-9 and it got worse as the day went on. It gradually got better after week 9 and was gone by about week 15. I never threw up, but I fight the urge to throw up with every ounce of my strength - there were a couple of time I came really close to losing it.

  • Add me to the add-day sickness club. I began throwing up multiple times a day the day I hit 6 weeks and continued until the day I hit 21 weeks. I got a 9 week reprieve from 21-30 weeks and at 30w 3d began throwing up again. I also threw up 4 times during labor, 3 in the labor room and once on the OR table before my c-section. But I haven't thrown up a single time since giving birth. :-)  And I would do it all over again for my DD. It sucked, but was totally worth it.

  • I responded no.  I had a few times when I didn't feel well but in general I wasn't sick and I never threw up.  The headaches nearly killed me though!
  • I had it until about 16 weeks. I was the sickest in the afternoon, usually starting around 4:30 pm when I was driving home from work, so that was super fun.

ETA: I did ended up yacking a few times on the drive home. I highly recommend keeping a few of these in your car. Gross, yes, but a lot better than cleaning your car.

This was me exactly with both pregnancies, except that it was gone by about 13-14 weeks.  I also found that if I ate small snacks and meals throughout the day and never let myself get hungry, it helped keep me from getting as nauseous.  This is also why I start gaining weight in the 1st tri, though, although I prefer that to feeling sick constantly.  :)

  • Yes.  I had all day sickness from week 6 to week 15.  Honestly, I'm a big wimp when it comes to not feeling well, so I thought I was going to die.  I cried almost every morning before work because I felt so miserable.  I was very tired all the time and basically felt like I was going to vomit 24/7.  I only vomited a few times during all those weeks.  I was given Zofran and I believe that helped keep what I could get down in my system, but it didn't take away the constant sick feeling.  Oh, DH got me a barf bag from the ambulance to keep in my purse just in case!  I still have it in there!

  • I said no because I got off really easy, but there was an almost constant low-grade, slight nausea until about week 15.  Nothing to complain about, especially if I "grazed" throughout the day.

  • all day nausea until about 20 weeks that would get worse in the evening, but no throwing up. I've been super tired the entire time though and never got the "2nd tri energy burst". I've been a little nauseous for the last week or two again, but nothing compared to the earlier part.

  • All day from weeks 7-15. Went to hospital for dehydration twice w/ for Tommy. Good times.

  • Not really.  I was nauseous some in the first trimester, but never got sick or even really felt like I needed to get sick. The time I felt worst was when I was late eating lunch and then I couldn't eat my DH's fabulous Superbowl fajitas.  That made me sad.

Pregnancy really treated me well - I'm one of those people who loved being pregnant.

  • I'm not done with this pregnancy yet, but here's my take.  I knew I was pregnant b/c i was nauseous.  I think i had nausea and vomiting almost daily until about 15 weeks.  Zofran and reglan really helped get me through the day. From about 15-20 weeks I still had nausea but only vomited a couple times a week. I still throw up about once a week but its usually only in the morning now.  Not really nauseous anymore.  I'm not going to lie, it was not fun.

  • i don't know what you consider morning sickness.  i only threw up once but omg, i was so nauseated all the time.  i felt like i had a hangover 24/7.  and i was EXHAUSTED from about 8w-20w.  i just could not get enough sleep.

  • im a little late, but im chime in (and freak you out). i had HG like becko, so my symptoms were extreme. there were many days where i threw up in the double digits. i was in the hospital for fluids around 8 weeks PG. i ended up with a pump in my leg that i wore continuously for four months with a constant drip of reglan to keep me from vomiting. i also threw up a ton during labor.

i cant wait to be pregnant again :) it was worth every minute of it.

This, but my nausea didn't get going until week 8 and it was the worst week 11.  There were a couple times I thought I was going to puke, but I never did.  I still said no because really, it wasn't all that bad.

  • Mine was more like nausea from 10 a.m. - bedtime.  I never actually threw up, but there were times I really wanted to.  I ended up gaining more than my doc wanted in my first tri because I ate a lot of pretzels to combat the nausea, but it all evened out in the end.  I was sick through week 15.  It started around week 4-5.

  • I answered yes but I never actually threw up. I felt like I had a bad hangover from about 6-9 weeks. I was fine after that. I still functioned at work..just not to my highest ability.

    Ditto.

  • For me it lasted from about week 6 to week 13 or so.  I never threw up though.  I just felt like I was about to - like that last 2 minutes right before you throw up.

With DD it was from about 4 PM until I went to bed.  With DS, it was from the time I woke up until the time I fell asleep - so non-stop.
