Whens the best time to conceive

I am going through the nursing program and my husband & I want to have a baby. We are going to wait until we are done with college, but wanted to have some opinion on when to try.

Do we try to get pregnant while I have like 7 months left of the nursing program & then have the baby 2 months later? The plus to this is I dont want to work for a while at first with the new baby, so there is no pressure to get to work right away, that bad part is going through the nursing program pregnant especially if it is not a healthy pregnancy.

The other option is waiting completely until I am done, but then when I come out of the program I will get a job & then have to quit when the baby comes.

Any opinions or personal experiences?

Right now my husband & I have everything else in order, a large house, health insurance, good jobs, and 30K saved up & we will continue to save up.

  • I would not want to be finishing up school pregnantor getting pregnany right after starting a job. Personally, I'd want to have some time to get established, have health benefits, etc. But you have to do what's best for you & your dh and know that even the best laid plans don't always pan out, esp. when ttc.

  • No one can tell you what to do nor can you "plan" when to get pregnant. With DS1, it took 6 months to get pregnant. With DS2, it took a year. So, even if you start trying at the time you'd need to to have the baby right after graduation, it doesn't mean you will even be pregnant by the time you graduate. It takes an average couple up to a year to conceive.

  • I have been trying to get pregnant for 2.5 years. It might take a month to get pregnant or longer. You do what is best for you and your DH, but I take the approach that nothing is going to stop me from trying to get pregnant, but I refuse to not live my life and put everything on hold for it either.

  • Get your school done, a career established, save some money, then have a baby.  It's the only thing that makes sense really.
  • Well, as the others pointed out you may try to be 7 months pregnant at graduation, but there are no guarantees that if you start trying with that in mind it will pan out that way.  Are you planning on returning to work after having a baby or will you plan to be a SAHM?  If you are planning to return to work I would hold off on TTC until you have been working for a few months.  Provided you have been working for the same company for 12 months and that company has over 50 employees they will be required to hold your job for 12 weeks under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA).  This is not required to be paid, but you would have job protection.  If you are planning to stay at home for a while then I would start trying while you're in school and see how things go.

This. All this being said, it took me over 18 months to get pg with my first. You never know what your timing will be.
  • I think being pregnant during nursing school is a HORRIBLE idea for so many reasons.  Graduate first and then have a baby.

  • Why are you bothering to go through nursing school if you just plan to have a baby right away and not work? That doesn't make any sense. And, I agree, what a dumb question.
