Recommend your portable DVD player.

Also, if you have an suggestions on what to look for in a DVD player, please post that too.  I want the type that you can hook to the back of the seat in the car.  Thanks for the help!

Re: Recommend your portable DVD player.

  • My husband is crazy about researching stuff and he likes this one:9" SONY DVP-FX930 DVPFX930 PORTABLE DVD PLAYER Sorry it's so big! We are in the market for one as well. You can buy the little case that goes on the seat.  He is all into tech stuff, he's found a few on EBay that are good deals.

  • I just talked to DH and he said we got it for $99 refurbished on EBay. He said this was the best one he found with a nice 9in screen and the best resolution.

  • I just bought this one for our last trip and really like it so far.

ETA:  Ok, I didn't read your whole post before responding.  I'm not sure if mine has straps for a car or not.  It does have a car charger though.  But it's more like a little laptop.  I bought it to use in an airplane.

  • We've got an Insignia portable DVD player (Best Buy's brand) that we got a few years ago. It has held up well, and I think it has better picture clarity than some of the Sony's or Polaroid players we compared at the store. Plus, it was cheaper than many of the other name brands. I think we got it for around $100 at the time, but the price may have come down by now.

  • We ended up going with a dual system (can't remember the details b/c MIL bought it for J for Christmas). We went with the dual system for 2 reasons:

    (1) hopefully we'll have more than 1 child soon to be able to watch them both

    (2)  but mainly because the dual systems are flat and usually the straps attach directly to the DVD player to hold on to the headrest. Most single players are like little laptops, so there's a part that sticks out and J LOVES to kick that part (my mom bought one like that for a trip and quickly took it back once we realized that was not going to work for us). Also, usually you have to put the single player in a bag to attach it to the headrest. It was just too big & bulky.

I wish I could give you more info, but it's actually at my in-laws right now so I can't even go look at it for you, but it's great! It came with a bag that holds both screens & all the cords and has a remote (which is nice if there's a ton of previews, otherwise I don't use it much). I should get it back tonight and I'll try to remember to post info about it. It was also VERY reasonably priced (I believe less than $100).

  • We recently got one like this.  I'm not sure if it's the exact same one, but it's a Philips and dual screen.  I agree on getting something with a flat screen that attaches directly to the seat.  Eli even likes to put his feet on this if he can so I would stay away from the laptop kind.

The only thing I don't like about ours is that it doesn't have a remote.  But what I've started doing is keeping me main screen up front with me that has the controls, and putting the second screen on Eli's seat.  That way I can easily work it or change movies while we're driving.  And then hopefully by the time we have another kid, Eli will be old enough and responsible enough to work the main screen by himself.

And we bought a case for it to hold everything, and you can use that to watch it inside, making it like one of the laptop-type ones.

  • The one I suggested rotates back too and you can buy a case that clips. My DH said for the $ the 9 inch screen was a good deal! We haven't gotten it yet, it is being shipped, and he found a case/clip on EBay for less than $10.
