Those needing to get a Social Security card...

Just an FYI.  If you go and ask them to just "change the name" of the child, they will surely do that, with the proper documentation.  BUT social security records will still have the birthparents names and info as the parents!!!!!  You have to go in with the new birth certificate and specifically ask them issue a new Social Security #, with a new card, and indicate you are now the parents on record.

I had went and changed my baby's name on her card and kept her original number since the birthparents never had it (that SS employee insisted I should just change her name on the original #), but later learned the records still indicated birthparents were mom and dad.  So I recently went back and just asked for a whole new # and card to make sure there was no complications down the line.

  • Yes. Our agency's lawyer said we'd have to bring pre-adoption paperwork and post-adoption paperwork to get a name change on DD's current SS#. That's what we plan to do.

yes, but Dr. Loretta, be sure they change the parents names linked on the SSN.  That's where I had the issues.  They changed her name and gave me a perfect card but I later discovered her bio parents were listed on her SSN files.
