North Dakota Babies

Back from the allergist.

Austin is allergic to milk, cheese and yogurt. Sad

Since he is so young he was only tested for a few things; milk, soy, and eggs. Not even 30 seconds after they put the milk serum on his arm he had a bunch of little hives. Luckily we are good to go with eggs and soy.

The Dr. wants us to come for a recheck in 6 months. She is hopeful that he will outgrow this allergy.

Tonight we have to make the decision on what to switch him to, soy or rice milk. Does anyone have an experience with either??

  • Sorry - I hope he grows out of it!  My friend's son had a huge dairy allergy and she put him on soy and he did great.  DH and I both drink soy milk for sensitivities to milk.  I don't know much about rice milk.
  • That stinks, but at least you figured out what the problem was.  Good luck!
  • Well at least you know now!!! Tons of vibes that he outgrows it quick!!!! Poor baby!!!!!

  • Lots of vibes that Austin outgrows these allergies quickly!!  Is almond milk an option?  I know nut allergies are fairly common as well at a young age...
  • I'm glad you figured things out. I have no experience with soy or rice milk. I can't have soy and haven't tried rice milk, a friend suggested almond milk and that's what I've been drinking. I haven't even seen rick milk in my local grocery, although I didn't look too hard. Lots of soy options though.

  • This is from my Dad (he's a pharmacist, a homeopathist, and a vegan with lots of milk alternatives experience, but he's not a doctor so obviously speak to your doctor first!)

He said to in general you want to avoid soy, rice, and nut milks with children under 4.  Soy and rice milk are extremely low in fat and soy milk can actually prevent calcium absorption, even if it's fortified so that one is a BIG no-no (and, btw, if you want to get pregnant again avoid soy milk... it can cause fertility problems according to my OB).  Almond milk may trigger a nut allergy so be careful with this one.  If you do opt for Almond milk he said it's best to avoid other nuts so he doesn't get a "nut overload".  Rice milk is a good option, but again very low in fat and he would need extra help in getting fat and nutrients he's not getting because of the milk alternative.

Have you tried goat's milk?  He said that was the best option in this case but he may be allergic to that, too.  But try it out first and see if it works.  The little guy I was a nanny for couldn't have milk either and thrived on goat's milk.  It smells horrible and is really expensive, but if it works it will give him the nutrients and fats he needs.

  • I'm going to pretty much second what Jaye said. I tried to eliminate dairy from my diet and did a fair amount of research, but mine wasn't really aimed at young children. I would keep him on formula if possible. GL!

  • I read the same thing Jaye said about soy, so I would try goat's milk.

I'm so glad you guys finally figured out what the problem was, though!  Will he have to avoid all dairy or just obvious?

  • Thanks ladies... I will look into all the options and do some research before making any decisions..

  • Aww, poor little guy.  I hope you guys find something that works for him!
  • I am glad they were able to find out quickly. I am sorry about the allergy. Hopefully he will outgrow it. My mom's BF is lactose intolerant, he drinks mostly lactose free milk. There are so many lactose free and soy products out there that can help substitute cheese, milk, ice cream, etc. Good luck!
  • Oh no.  However, at least now you know.  I hope someone gives you the answers that you are looking for.
