Preemies

just saying hi...

My identical baby boys were born yesterday at 34 weeks.  I had a scheduled C-section.  My pregnancy was complicated with twin to twin transfusion syndrome, preterm labor, gestational diabetes, and both babies in the same sac.  Because they were in the same sac, there was a risk for cord entanglement and compression, so I had a scheduled C-section at 34 weeks.

My babies are doing wonderful.  They have not needed any respiratory support.  They both weighed 4lb 13oz.  One of the baby's heart walls are thick because of the twin to twin transfusion, but the ECHO shows no obstruction, so the cardiologist thinks it will fix itself.  The other baby has had a very high hematocrit since birth, so he was started on phototherapy today even though his bilirubin was only 5.1.  They are both in isolettes, but slowly being weaned down.  They are both eating orally every three hours.  They take anywhere from 10-25.  Right now, ideally, we are looking for a minimum of 15 ml every 3 hours.  They are getting HA and lipids to supplement.  Today I was able to give one of the babies a bottle.  As of now, the doctors say they are "boring."

So far, this seems like the longest 24 hours ever.  I am trying to use this time to recover from the C-section, so I can be better when I take them home.  I don't think I have any specific questions at this time, but I am sure I will have in the future.  I think that DH and I had an idea of what to expect because this has been planned for a few weeks, but that still does not make it any less overwhelming and scary.  Any advice or stories you can give, would be appreciated.  If any of your babies experienced similar situations, please feel free to share, so I can know what to expect in the future.  TIA!

Re: just saying hi...

  • While I have no experience with the twin issues you've described, I wanted to congratulate you on your new babies! DS was born at 34w5d and had RDS, so it's great that your new LOs don't need any respiratory help at all and are already eating. I hope you have a short NICU stay and all the remaining issues resolve quickly. GL!
