Houston Babies

another BF ?

After I am done with this Thrush :( I am going to start pumping after I nurse to start my stash for when I go back to work.  When did yall pump? Right after you nursed or 1 hour after you nursed?  I am a little confused, I have heard both.

Oh and if any of yall had Thrush how long does it take to clear up.  We have been on treatment for almost a week and the LO still has it in her mouth.  I am not having anymore syptoms but I do have a nasty rash all over my boobs which I think is an allergic reaction to the Nystatin.  I really need it to go away because I want to start my freezer stash for when I go away for the weekend in the beginning of Sept. :(

Re: another BF ?

  • I never had any thrush symptoms myself but Cooper had it and it took the full 2 weeks plus some to completely go away.  I wasn't as regular w/ the nystatin as I should have been though.  It made his tummy hurt and he threw it up a lot.  Sad

I did give him acidophilus too towards the end and that seemed to help a lot.  (I'd just break open the capsule and dip my wet finger into the powder and rub it on the inside of his cheeks).

Sorry you are dealing with thrush, it is not fun!!

ETA:  If the Nystatin is bothering your skin, you can use a regular over the counter anti-fungal cream on yourself, just clean it off before you nurse or pump.

  • Isn't there some purple stuff you could use for thrush as well?

    Gentian Violet.

You can pump whenever you want. It's really whatever works for you. There's no time that you "shouldn't" pump. Try both, see what works better.

Gentian violet is the old "home remedy."   I didn't try it but I hear it stains everything (your clothes, the kid's mouth, your boobs) purple.

  • never had thrush so can't help you there...but i started building my stash up by pumping in the morning since that's when my supply was at its highest.  i believe that's when there's the highest level of some hormone that helps with milk supply.   first i would pump after nursing b/c i knew my LO didn't eat as much as I was producing.  then when i started working, i would pump right before leaving for work without nursing since most of the time LO was still asleep. HTH!
  • Never had thrush...hope it gets better soon!

When I was on maternity leave, I would pump right after the morning feed.  I was always really full in the mornings even after DS ate.  This was also the easiest time to pump...before our day actually got going.

  • I normally pumped right after every other feeding or anytime I felt like DS didn't eat really well and I was still pretty full.

  • We dealt with thrush for 3-4 weeks and it has come back a couple of times. What worked well was rubbing sodium bicarbonate in DD's cheeks and tongue and washing my breast with a vinegar + water solution. As babies get older, their immune system gets better at dealing with Candida, the fungus that causes thrush.DD has had it in for 1 month at least.

Do not try the Gentian violet until you're truly desperate. It does stain everything and it's not a pretty sight when used in babies' mouths.
