Babies won't sleep at night

The twins are almost 2 weeks old and ever since we brought them home they won't sleep in their bassinet at night. They sleep fine during the day taking naps but as soon as it's time to sleep in their bassinet they won't sleep no matter what we try. I feed them, change them and rock them to sleep and literally as soon as their heads hit the mattress they are crying again thinking they need to eat. It's like this until at least 4 or even 6 AM. Anyone else going through this. Luckily we see the pedi this Friday so I'm going to be sure to ask him but I'm just at a loss and don't know what to do to get them to sleep. I'm not expecting them to sleep through the night but at least an hour or two instead of just a few minutes.

Re: Babies won't sleep at night

  • It took us a little while to get them to sleep flat. At about 5 weeks or so Amelia would sleep flat in the bassinet and now she does great in the crib. But Logan does not do well flat because of his reflux. Do you have any other symptoms of reflux or maybe gas. I know my babies turned into real gas factories at two weeks which made night time very difficult. It seemed to really effect them at night where they would wake screaming.
  • Our pedi told us that it's common for newborns to sleep a lot better during the day than at night.  We had trouble getting ours to sleep at first too (although it doesn't sound like it was quite as bad as it is for you).  Our girls would do the same thing in their cribs - they hated laying flat.  Is your bassinet pretty flat?  Does it kind of cradle them?  We started putting our girls in the newborn napper of the pack n' play.  It was inclined and small so it kind of cradled them so that they felt snug and secure.  This helped a ton.  Also there were days they wouldn't fall asleep and I would just let them fall asleep in a swing or bouncy... anything just to get them to sleep.  Luckily this all passed after a month or so and they started sleeping really well in their cribs.  Also, do you swaddle them?  If not, maybe that would help.  I know it did for one of ours.  GL!

  • Have you seen the Happiest Baby on the Block video (there's a book too)?  It really helped us with newborn sleep.  Swaddling is a big part of it.
  • I second the swaddling. Mine won't sleep without it.  And the Halo swaddle wraps are awesome for nighttime.  It velcros them in so they can't break out of the swadle and startle themselves awake. It looks kind of harsh, but they like it.

Also, my guys won't sleep in their crib or bassinet, but they love their Fisher Price Rock and Play Sleeper.  It's angled to help with reflux and is designed to meet the same standards as a bassinet for overnight sleeping. The best money I've spent. They're lightweight too, so we start them off in our room and then once they're asleep we slide them across the hall to their room.

    Good luck!
