I see my Dr. on Thursday and I am sure he will tell me. I do feel like this pregnancy is off so I do think I MC I just wonder about this, thoughts?

Re: Blighted Ovum with Yolk Sac?

  • I always thought a BO was the presence of a yolk sac but no embryo develops.

  • I had read it was when nothing was in there, no yolk sac or fetal pole? Hmmm, either way it stinks:(

  • I think that's maybe a chemical pregnancy??  I have no idea.  I've done so  much reading in the past 2 weeks on this topic it makes my head spin.

Whatever you call it, it still hurts like hell.

  • Sorry for your loss. This is info I found that may help you understand what your doctor told you. Obviously you should talk to him about it - but hope this helps for now!

Blighted ovum: A blighted ovum, or anembryonic pregnancy, takes place when an egg that has been fertilized travels down the fallopian tube to the uterus where it is implanted in the uterine wall. Although it starts developing normally in some respects, by developing a sac, no embryo develops.

Chemical Pregnancy: A chemical pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg does not implant into the uterine wall. If a pregnancy test is taken just at the right time it will be positive, however when a repeat test is taken several days later, it will be negative.

  • I am so sorry for your loss. I also had a blighted ovum.

There was a gestational sac and placenta,  but no embryo.  My doctor described it like this:  everything developed as planned, except the baby.  When the cells were dividing, something went wrong that caused the embryo to not develop.  I saw the sac on the u/s too, but nothing inside the sac.  No baby, thus no heartbeat.  I was 7w3d at the time.  If they saw a sac, it was definitely a BO, not a chemical pregnancy.  I am sure your doctor can explain this better, just thought I'd share my experience.  HTH!

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.  I orginally thought I had a blighted ovum but it turned out to be a missed m/c.  For a blighted ovum there is a gestational sac but not a yolk sac.  The yolk sac and gestational sac are two different things with the gestational sac developing fist.  If there is a yolk sac then it is not technically a blighted ovum. A blighted ovum is an empty gestational sac.

  • Thanks everyone, I guess I had a missed M/C since i had a gestational sac and a yolk sac but no fetal pole was ever seen. I keep wondering if I should wait longer and have one more US just to be sure. guess I'll see what my Dr. says on Thursday, ughh I hate this.
