Lanolin Alternative?

I was just wondering if there was an alternative to lanolin? I try to avoid using animal by-products when possible. I don't have any woolies, and don't know if I ever will. I just was thinking about the possibilities, especially since I don't know what will work/won't work for LO.

ETA: I've not had problems with nipple creams/lotions/etc. I was more asking about lanolin and it's connection to wool cloth diapers. :)

Re: Lanolin Alternative?

  • I had a nipple butter from Earth mama / angel baby. Honestly, it didn't work anywhere near as well as lanolin.

  • I know some people use unlanolized wool, but I find it works MUCH better when you lanolize.  The thing is that lanolin occurs naturally in wool (insofar as sheep produce it - then it gets stripped out when the wool is processed into yarn) and it's what makes it repel water and self-clean.  I'm not aware of anything that could meet both criteria - and both are vital, IMO.  If you had to hand-wash woolies after every single use, I don't think they'd be very popular.

  • Lanolin reacts chemically with the compounds in urine to convert them to soap and water -- thus, the self-washing aspect of woolies.

IMO, if you're opposed to using lanolin you should probably seek alternatives for your diaper covers.  Fleece can be machine washed, if you want some breathability. Otherwise, you could just stick to PUL.
