armoire vs. dresser

so i've been looking at more and more furniture, and now i'm wondering if i should get an armoire instead of a dresser? thoughts?

i plan to get a long dresser, that i can put a changing pad on, and then was going to get a tall dresser - but now i'm wondering if i should get an armoire now instead of the tall dresser..?

Re: armoire vs. dresser

  • a chest vs. an armoire - i guess it depends on what you need. Does the bedroom have a large enough closet? Are you planning to use this furniture for a long time? If your closet has enough space to hang clothes (even when s/he gets older) then get a chest (tall dresser) but if you are lacking closet space then you can opt for an armoire.

In my opinion an armoire is used for when the closet is really small - armoires are really large

  • I am getting a wardrobe/armoire thing - this one - simply because the closet in LO's room is taken up by all the CRAP that used to be in that room.

I am also getting a matching dresser - this one - for folded clothes.

I LOVE that wardrobe/armoire thing from Ikea. TOTALLY cute. That's a really good idea! We have a closet in the room, however, it's farly small. My DH seems to think it's plenty and that we only need one dresser.  I don't think he understands how much stuff will be collected.  Diaper storage, toys, clothing, etc.

  • Our nursery does not have a closet, so we will definitely be getting an armoire along with a tall dresser-the more storage, the less clutter around the room!

In our old house we had to use DS's closet for DH's clothes, so DH made this for his room. We hung clothes in the top and there were three shelves behind the cabinet doors. His diaper pail was underneath the changing table. It could be taken apart into 3 pieces. I was so sad we couldn't fit it up the stairs in our new house. We took the changing table off and use the two sides in our living room.

Anyway, my original point was that an armoire is kind of a must have for hanging stuff if you don't have closet space. I liked the shelves more than a dresser for folded stuff though, because I could see everything without digging.

  • Our room has a closet in it so we ordered a long dresser (6 drawers) and a hutch to go on top.  We can take out bottom shelf while I'm using the top of the dresser as a changing table. I like the idea that we can put little things on display rather than putting shelves in the walls.
