Nurseries and Baby Gear

Registry question

So, we've still got awhile before we start our registry, but in looking at some of my friends' registries I came up with a question.  If you have 2 registries (we're thinking Amazon and BRU), do you put duplicate items on both registries?  Yes, one place carries things that the other doesn't, thats why you have 2 registries, but, for example, do you put the swing or stroller you want on both registries, just in case people don't look at both?  Sorry if this was confusing.  TIA for your help!

Re: Registry question

  • I would put items on both b/c pricing & sales change depending on the site & if someone wants to order you multiple items, they don't HAVE to go to 2 places.  You may end up getting some dups, but you will get gift receipts & then get the things you need!!!  Trust me I just had my shower & you will still need to go shopping afterwards to get all the little things.

  • I did, but then you run the risk of getting duplicates at your shower.  (I got duplicates of items I didn't list twice too- target was really bad with updating the registry.)  I wouldn't do it, just try to put a variety of priced items on both registries.
  • Yes, I duplicated some items on mine between BRU and Amazon. I just had to make sure I kept on top of things and deleted from one when it was bought from the other.

In many cases, Amazon had better prices than BRU.

  • I personally loathe it when people have 2 registries and the same items on both. It's confusing and part of the point of registries is to offer suggestions and limit the duplicates you get. Most people will not check both registries to see if the items are the same or if what they want to buy has been purchased already on the other registry. They'll stick with one registry or get confused by the duplicate items. Just my two cents!

  • I put some items on both of my registries. I registered at BBB and Target, and I know not that many people are going to go to BBB because of convenience. But I put my priority items (bottles, sleepers, blankets) on both because those are the things I want to be sure to put at the top of "my list." When I go to a shower, I don't look over 2 lists. I pick the store I am going to shop at, and get that list. So probably most people won't even know they are listed on 2 lists. And if you get duplicates, it's not that big a deal. It seems like you get duplicates even when they are only listed one place since lists can be so poorly maintained. So I am hoping to just "lurk" and then if something is purchased on one list, I'll probably delete it from the other.

I agree with this.  If you know you're going to be all over it on deleting the things from one registry that were purchased from the other, I don't see the problem.

I have a BRU and an Amazon registry.  The big/expensive things are duplicated because they're almost without fail far cheaper on amazon, but the little things are pretty much just BRU.

FWIW, I suspect that no one will shop from my amazon registry but me.  I'm cool with that.

  • I only put things on my Amazon registry that are unavailable at BBB (like diaper covers, a few books, all cotton PnP sheets, etc.) because for some reason, people are really resistant to shopping on Amazon. My aunt told me she'd buy me my stroller, and I put a link to it on amazon and even emailed her the link like she asked me to, and she went and bought it at BBB, though it was out of stock there (and in stock at amazon) and though I have to wait until it comes into stock at BBB and go pick it up at the store, whereas at Amazon it would be delivered to my house for free. I don't get it, but it's a free stroller, so I can't really complain about how she chooses to give it to me!

That being said, however, almost NO ONE has bought ANYTHING from my registry. A couple of the big-ticket items have gone, but in the $10-20 range, people have chosen to buy me clothes, blankets, or books on their own rather than sheets, diaper covers, or sleepsacks from my registry. I didn't register for clothing/toys/receiving blankets because everyone warned me this is what would happen.I only put items on my registry that I absolutely NEEDED, too. I know a lot of places (not Amazon) will give you discounts for registry completion, so the plan is to go in and buy whatever is left, since I KNOW I'll need it.

There is still some time, but I estimate that if no one at my upcoming shower buys gift cards or any of the things left on my registry (smaller items, all but 5 under $20 and two of the 'overs' are under $40), then the total is about $675.

We also need to buy a carseat (it's on my registry, but I don't expect anyone to get it) at $189, the ergo carrier ($110), and the crib mattress which isn't on our registry but is $259. We haven't registered for a swing and I plan to buy that used from CL if we need one, since they are much cheaper. We also need to do some additional work on the nursery, like buy a rug and I need to factor in the price of getting the electrican in there.

    So: $259 + $189 + $110 + ~$100 (rug) and ~$250 (electrician) =  $808

    $808 (fixed costs) + (up to) $675 (from registry) = $1483

  • I don't think I would put dup's of big ticket items on (like the same $300 stroller on both registeries) but I did put the same kinds of things on both of my registeries. I have one kind of bottle I reg'd for at Target and a different brand on BRU, I did the same thing with sheets (one brand/color at Target & a different at BRU).

  • We did Amazon and BRU and I did duplicate some items that were bigger/really important (like the crib and carseat) so that people would see them regardless of which one they looked at.  I figured if they got bought off both, it would be easy to return the one from BRU and exchange for something else we need.
