My husband and I are recently married and we have been recommended by my OB to start TTC. Under normal circumstances, we would wait for a bit and enjoy the honeymoon stage but there is one concern, how long will it take for us to conceive. The reason there is a concern is because in 2009, I had a dermoid cyst on my right ovary and my dr could not remove the cyst without taking the ovary. Therefore, I only have one ovary which cuts my fertility in half (meaning, I can only get pregnant every other month). My dr is concerned about how long it may take me to conceive and recommends that if we want to start a family within the next few years, then we need to start trying now. I am hoping that it will not take long to get pregnant but...you just don't know.
I am wondering if there are any women out there that have or had the same situation happen to them and how it is going TTC?
Any advice?
Re: New to the bump...and TTC and have concerns
I would get a second opinion. I may be wrong, but your remaining ovary *might* take over each month. And if not, your odds during that "good" cycle are going to be just as good as anyone with 2 functioning ovaries.
Do you know which cycle you are considered to be fertile? I'd focus on that cycle and do what others normally do to TTC during the fertile window. I would still recommend Taking Charge of Your Fertility and/or fertilityfriend.com to get to know your cycles and time sex so you can TTC optimally.

How old are you? If you're not pushing AMA (Advanced Maternal Age/35) there's probably not much harm in waiting. Your doctor sounds like he's causing panic for no good reason. Get a second opinion.
I don't have fallopian tubes. I had to have them removed in my early 20s, I'm now 28. We will do IVF when we are ready to be parents. I still have time.
I had a huge (5 1/2 pound) cyst on my left ovary about 5 years ago, and the GYN had to remove the ovary because it was so badly damaged. Luckily, my right ovary is fine and has been cyst-free. I am TTC via IUI (I have to use donor sperm), so I get ultrasounds multiple times every month. I am taking Clomid, and my one ovary has ovulated every try (often multiple follicles). I had one chemical pregnancy, but am not pregnant yet after 5 tries. But, I am 34 and so may have other reasons for not getting pregnant right away.
I also ovulated regularly without meds, based on the home-based ovulation tests. I would definitely get a second opinion if you are not ready to start a family now. Don't rush it just because you have one ovary. But, I should add that if the doc is afraid you could develop a cyst on the other ovary, that could be a good reason to consider it now.
